Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin is a community rabbi who works in the fields of faith and sustainability. She is currently the President of the Baltimore Board of Rabbis, Chair of the Baltimore Jewish community’s Environmental Sustainability Network, and Chair of the Sustainability Initiative of the Conservative movement’s Tzedek Center.

Humanitarians save lives and it is up to us to support them, honor them, and allow them to do their work when disasters strike.

From the UN: “To pull us back from that edge, this World Humanitarian Day we’re relaunching with sharper urgency demanding protection, accountability and action.

It’s time to turn global outrage into real pressure on those in power, asking them to:

Protect humanitarian workers and the civilians they serve
Uphold international humanitarian law
Fund the lifelines we claim to support
If we can’t protect the people who save lives, what does that say about us? If we let this continue, we risk losing not just a system but our sense of humanity.”

Three years ago this week, more than 8,000 people representing over 200 faith traditions responded to a call to conscience and gathered in Chicago for the 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions. These people brought diverse experiences and perspectives and engaged with spiritual and political leaders from around the world. They also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Parliament’s foundational document, “Towards A Global Ethic.” Re-live the 2023 Parliament with us!

This dialogue will explore what key faith teachings and documents—including Laudato Si’, Laudate Deum, Al-Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth, and important Jewish teachings on creation and justice—can teach us about a just and faithful response to the climate crisis. The webinar seeks to foster a deeper understanding, shared moral responsibility, and collaborative action among Christians, Muslims, and Jews to address the urgent challenges facing our common home. Across countries and communities, young people seek dignity, opportunity, meaningful participation, decent work, quality education, and a sustainable future."

Today has been designated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by the United Nations. Indigenous knowledge is critical to building a better world, especially when it comes to sustainability and combating climate change. Measures must be taken to protect and preserve indigenous knowledge and traditions and to protect the rights of these communities.
