As part of the Gender Working Group of the Multi-Faith Advisory Council, the Parliament of the World’s Religions participated in an intra-faith workshop hosted by The Jewish Theological Seminary - JTS on Tuesday. The group discussed the draft compendium on promoting positive faith-based responses for promoting gender equality.

In dialogue with the Parliament of the World’s Religions’ document on interfaith responsibility, panelists will discuss faith-based efforts to defend human rights and to combat authoritarian efforts that seek to divide populations and assert power through the abuse of minority populations.

This webinar will focus on faith resources and motivations for resistance and solidarity from a variety of religious perspectives; a second follow-up webinar will focus on faith-based actions to build solidarity in resistance to authoritarianism.

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are separate holidays that are a follow-up to Sukkot; the completion of the annual cycle of Torah readings. This joyous milestone is marked with dancing, traditionally following seven circuits known as hakafot, as the Torah scrolls are held aloft. Both days are celebrated by nightly candle lighting and festive meals at both night and day.

Today is the International Day of Non-Violence, celebrated on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

Non-violence is central to the mission and vision of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. Our guiding document, “Towards a Global Ethic” says, “We commit ourselves to a culture of non-violence, respect, justice and peace. We shall not oppress, injure, torture or kill other human beings, forsaking violence as a means of settling differences.”

Last week, Gender Working Group Co-Chairs of the Multi-Faith Advisory Council met with Co-Chair of the Inter-Agency Taskforce on Religion and Sustainable Development, Dr. Nkeiruka Didigu, Senior Strategic Partnerships Specialist of UNFPA, and colleagues from the UN Genocide Office.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The UN General Assembly declared this day in 2013 and nuclear disarmament remains the UN’s highest disarmament priority.

In the Parliament of the World's Religions’ guiding document, we call upon world leaders and “persons who hold political power to work within the framework of a just order and commit themselves to the most non-violent, peaceful solutions possible.”

An important reflection from Katherine Marshall of Georgetown University’s The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs on the increasingly contested space around “family values,” religion, and gender equality—and the important role faith communities can play in advancing the rights and dignity of women and girls.

The Parliament of the World’s Religions is proud to be part of the Gender Working Group of the UN Multi-Faith Advisory Council, which is working to elevate positive, faith-rooted approaches to gender equality and human rights.

Building on its Side by Side advocacy work, the Gender Working Group is developing a compendium of positive faith-based responses, bringing together concrete examples from diverse religious and faith communities of how sacred teachings, religious leadership, and interfaith action can advance gender equality and respond constructively to narratives that undermine the rights of women and girls.

As this article reminds us, the conversation should not be reduced to religion versus human rights. Faith communities themselves contain powerful traditions, voices, and practices that affirm human dignity, equality, and justice.
