Meet Linet Yar, a refugee who fled civil war in her home country of South Sudan 🇸🇸 in search of a better life in Nairobi. Linet enrolled in RefuSHE’s Fashion & Design 🧵👗 program and is now starting her career in Nairobi’s thriving fashion industry.

2025 - RefuSHE’s 18th year - was a year of tremendous impact amidst global funding shortages and continued instability across East Africa. Working with dozens of strategic partners and communities across Nairobi, we delivered far-reaching results for hundreds of refugee girls and women while reaching thousands more through community trainings and women ambassador groups. Cohort 2 of our functional literacy and numeracy program is underway, and the momentum from last year is carrying us forward.

In 2025, in our first cohort graduated with skills that many of us take for granted: reading, writing, and basic math. Skills that unlock something bigger than they sound. The ability to fill out a form without asking for help. To serve a customer confidently. To send a message and know it says what you meant.

Displacement cuts off schooling. Host countries don't always pick up where conflict left off. RefuSHE, with the generous support of the Zakat Foundation of America, is stepping into that gap for refugee women in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Over the past two weeks, our team has worked with refugee women in the communities we serve to identify and nominate peace champions who will represent urban refugees on Kenya’s National Peace Steering Committee, ensuring their perspectives are included in national peacebuilding processes.

The 20 nominees (16 women and 4 men) are refugees with lived experience of displacement and resettlement, and deep roots in the communities they represent. That lived proximity to community realities is what makes their voices essential in shaping inclusive and grounded peacebuilding efforts.

We are grateful to GIZ Kenya and the Civil Peace Service (CPS) of GIZ programme for funding and supporting this critical work.

Refugee voices must be present where decisions are made. We are proud to help make that inclusion possible.
