Students for Health Equity

Students for Health Equity Students for Health Equity (SHE) at the U of Chicago has fought with the Trauma Care Coalition, to change our city's distribution of healthcare resources.

We are a group of undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Chicago. Through educational events and direct-action protests, we hold our university’s medical center to its promises of trauma care for Chicago's South Side. Thus we change our city’s distribution of healthcare resources. We are a member of the Trauma Care Coalition, led by the youth of Southside Together Organizing for

Power (STOP). See this page for updates, and our website for background. And don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re interested in learning more, supporting, getting involved, or anything else!

The University of Chicago's president accused his students’ encampment of “using force rather than reason”... So yesterday he sent in dozens of police at 4:30am to raid and demolish the encampment.

Meanwhile Gaza has no fully-functioning hospitals or universities, due not least to weapons made by U.S. companies that UChicago invests in and profits from. SIGN THIS PETITION: bit.ly/AlumniGazaSolidarity

The university has presented itself as a national model for free expression on campus. Its president said that the encampment “cannot continue.”

This just in. And what better time than now to support the Trauma Care Coalition's lead organizations once more!

Today is the last day a foundation is doubling donations to Kenwood Oakland Community Organization and Southside Together Organizing for Power - STOP. kocoonline.org/donate, stopchicago.org/donate

Support our alum Anna, and fight mass incarceration!

Harvard Law School is considering expelling her -- six months after silently protesting its investment in prisons, and just before she graduates. (Remind you of any "peer institution"?)

Again, why the South Side has especially needed a trauma center:

Compared to average trauma centers, ours has more than three times the rate of penetrating trauma -- here, mostly gun-shot wounds.

At the lecture commemorating a year of the Trauma Center Operation, panelists discussed the Violence Recovery Program and looked ahead to possible partnerships with the UChicago Crime Lab.

🚨🚨🚨National Call to Action🚨🚨🚨
A former SHE member has alerted us to a critical campaign that deserves national attention: Masonique Saunders, a 17-year-old girl, has been in jail since December in Columbus, Ohio, because the police killed her boyfriend are now trying to charge /her/ with the murder. We need to put pressure on prosecutor Ron O'Brien. Please read the story, sign the petition, and contribute if you can to the fundraiser.

After shooting and killing a 16-year-old during a sting operation, police in Columbus, Ohio have charged another 16-year-old girl with the murder, alleging that even though the teen was killed by a member of their SWAT team, it was all her fault.

Almost a decade after STOP founded the trauma-center campaign, two east coast foundations led by a UChicago Medicine trustee have donated for social services around the new trauma center.

So... plant seeds for more! Donate to the community organizing that made this possible!

The money will go toward a program that provides counseling, child care and even help finding housing while a family member is hospitalized.
