For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, a day off of work & a weekend of grilling, travel, & spending time with loved ones. It's great to take advantage of all these activities on your day off, but for those who have served in the military, & particularly for Gold Star families (the immediate family members of someone who died while serving in the armed forces), can be bittersweet & at times far from a happy celebration.

Warriors Beyond War wants to ensure that as a nation we honor the true intent of Memorial Day, which is to remember those U.S. Military Veterans who have given their lives in service of our country. So, let's take a brief moment in our day today to honor and remember those brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice as well as their family members who have to carry on after their loved one.

Did you know that research has shown that simply petting a dog & other pets lowers the stress hormone cortisol, while the social interacting with dogs & other pets actually increases levels of the feel-good hormone oxytocin? (the same hormone that bonds mothers to babies).

In fact, a study revealed that those who spent more time with their dogs experienced a 300 percent increase in oxytocin levels.

Our Story

The founder of Warriors Beyond War was also the Executive Director for the now dissolved Soldiers Who Salsa organization based out of San Diego. Although both organizations serve(ed) a similar mission, the Executive Director having served in the U.S. Marines for 14yrs with a brother in serving in the Police department & another as a Fireman, he understood that both veterans and first responders share many common experiences. He realized the opportunity to serve not only more wounded veterans, but similar warriors such as our nation’s first responders. Additionally, while serving overseas in Iraq, the E.D lost 14 amazing Marines who were KIA. He knows the importance of ensuring that not only they are not forgotten, but their families as well. Once the newly appointed Board director decided to dissolve SWS, The E.D saw an amazing opportunity to move his resources and headquarters to Chicago, IL, continue the mission that Soldiers Who Salsa was founded on, but implementing the above changes, to become a much more inclusive organization, have a more therapeutically focused program and maintain a very active organization. This is what lead Warriors Beyond War to be founded. Although the organization is based out of Chicago, our focus is on being a national organization. In addition to our dance program we create and take part in various events, dance and non-dance related programs and activities as well as veteran focused and non veteran focused events to ensure our alumni have many opportunities to come together as a family and be in a safe environment of bonding, camaraderie and healing. Currently, thanks to the amazing donations from people like you, we are looking at opportunities to expand in new parts of the country to reach more of our wounded warriors.
