Feed1st We alleviate hunger using a 24/7/365 self-serve, no questions asked approach for people experiencing food insecurity . Powered by

The Feed1st program was founded in 2010 by a small group of medical students, chaplaincy, and researchers at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Lindau Lab at the University of Chicago. Anecdotal evidence from hospital staff suggested that many families of inpatients at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital were not able to get enough to eat during their chi

ld's stay in the hospital. With support from hospital staff and faculty, a group of medical students founded Feed1st. Today, we provide non-perishable items for the University of Chicago Medicine Community including patients, families, caregivers, and staff. Everyone is able to freely take whatever items they need, no questions asked, no proof of need required, no barriers to access. Pantries are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in 5 locations throughout the UChicago Medical Center:
-- 1st floor of Comer Children's Hospital (elevator vestibule across from the cafe)
-- the Center for Care and Discovery's (CCD) 7th floor Sky Cafe
-- the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine's (DCAM) 6th floor Oncology suite
-- the Adult Emergency Department
-- a staff pantry in the basement of Mitchell, room W053

For Macy it was growing up on a farm with a large garden in Iowa and learning to share nutritious food and recipes with loved ones that sparked her interest in dietetics. She started working as a registered dietitian at UCM over three years ago and when she heard that a garden existed, she couldn’t wait to get involved!

This season she led the Tuesday morning harvest and helps coordinate distribution.
“Over the last few years it has been wonderful to see not just a garden expand, but also the growth of patient interest and garden recognition! Although I love being outside and getting my hands dirty, my favorite part of the garden committee is distributing our freshly harvested produce to all the hospital feed first locations and striking of conversations about gardening, cooking, and food with patients (even if it starts by someone saying “what smells like onions?!” While riding the elevator)

We’re proud to have volunteers like Macy who truly enjoy volunteering and sharing their stories. FEED1ST thanks you for all your work Macy!❤️

It's amazing what people can do when they come together to help others. UChicago Medicine nurses and faculty have joined together to run an ongoing biweekly personal care item drive. Thanks to this hospital wide effort led by Patricia Frias-Kaehler BSN, RN CPAN, and Nurse Practice Council Co-Chair, Feed1st will have new personal care items on the shelves of our pantries every two weeks for the entirety of 2021. Just look at all these items we have in our pantries!😍

A big thank you to the UChicago staff for all your support. We are extremely grateful!
