The Feed1st program was founded in 2010 by a small group of medical students, chaplaincy, and researchers at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Lindau Lab at the University of Chicago. Anecdotal evidence from hospital staff suggested that many families of inpatients at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital were not able to get enough to eat during their chi
ld's stay in the hospital. With support from hospital staff and faculty, a group of medical students founded Feed1st. Today, we provide non-perishable items for the University of Chicago Medicine Community including patients, families, caregivers, and staff. Everyone is able to freely take whatever items they need, no questions asked, no proof of need required, no barriers to access. Pantries are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in 5 locations throughout the UChicago Medical Center:
-- 1st floor of Comer Children's Hospital (elevator vestibule across from the cafe)
-- the Center for Care and Discovery's (CCD) 7th floor Sky Cafe
-- the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine's (DCAM) 6th floor Oncology suite
-- the Adult Emergency Department
-- a staff pantry in the basement of Mitchell, room W053
