The “if you can’t afford diapers, don’t have kids” argument always skips one inconvenient detail: the babies already exist.

Parents still have to work. Daycare still requires diapers. And nearly half of families with young children in the U.S. are struggling to afford them.

So what’s the plan?

Should parents stop working? Pull their kids out of childcare? Leave babies in the same diaper longer than is healthy?

Diapers are a basic necessity, yet our safety net still pretends they’re optional.

The babies are already here. The real question is why the system still hasn’t caught up.

Diapers sit at the bottom of a whole chain reaction.

No diapers means no daycare.
No daycare means parents can’t work.
No work means families can’t stabilize.

And yet we still treat diapers like a “nice extra” instead of the basic infrastructure families need to function.

That’s not a parenting problem.
It’s a policy gap.

Illinois proved what happens when you fix it: $40 a month, digital, simple, dignified.
No warehouses. No hoops. Just diapers.

Remove the barrier and families move forward.

So the real question isn’t whether this works.

It’s why we ever treated diapers like a luxury in the first place.
