Fulfilling Our Purpose
The Gordon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on helping children & families, especially those affected by the child welfare system. Kate Gordon Eller, along with her parents, Bill & Doey Gordon, founded TGF in November 2018. The Gordons have devoted their lives to working with kids & their families to give them a chance at a brighter future, with the belief that children are our greatest treasure in life & that helping them now, helps us all for years to come. Our name is Kate's tribute to her parents, acknowledging the foundation they gave Kate & her brother, Sean; a foundation that gave them each so much & that Kate wants to share with other children, knowing the enormous impact a strong foundation & invested adults can have on a child's life.
The Gordon Foundation was established to support children & families get through the hard times in life that we all face, especially when those times begin to break down families. We are beginning this endeavor by providing supportive programming to children & families, both those currently involved in the child welfare system, and those who are not, through meeting tangible & intangible needs (holiday gifts, tutoring services, winter coats, etc.), providing services (immigrant guardianship clinics, mentoring programs, etc.) and as we receive funding, we will grow the organization to create evidence-based, experience-driven program models, and make drastic improvements to the child welfare system through systemic change. Our efforts can be divided into three areas, under which each of our programs fall: 1) family preservation; 2) bridging current gaps in the child welfare system; and, 3) systemic change through model programs & policy input.
Why do we believe, without a doubt, that we can do this? Between Bill, Doey, and Kate, we have over 80 years of experience working with children & their families, during which time we’ve achieved feats others deemed impossible. Bill is a veteran & social worker (33 years), Doey is a certified child life specialist (11 years) and was previously a teacher (21 years), and Kate is a social worker (17 years) and child welfare/public interest attorney (8 years). We have the education, experience, and insight to know how to do this, as well as the drive and commitment to follow through, no matter what, as we have our whole lives. We are also committed to continuously seeking out others with expertise in a variety of fields that impact children & families, who can provide the best input & direction for our kids, for our staff, leadership, and board, and we will continuously endeavor to utilize the best minds & hearts to help us work toward our purpose. Nonetheless, if questioned as to our resistance to accept the status quo or ability to overcome it, this quote rings true: “The question should be, is it worth trying to do, not can it be done.” (Allard Lowenstein). These children, and their families, are worth trying to do this (and succeeding!), and we plan to show them just how much we believe that.
