The Sphinx Foundation for Archaeological Research (SFAR) recognizes Moudir Sayed, for his extraordinary service over the past two years. His words of encouragement, advice, planning and arrangements, work with our partners and grant-funded missions, and all of his efforts, have made things possible for SFAR in Egypt. Thank you, ya Moudir.

We are deeply grateful for all our friends in Egypt, and without their help, this work would not be possible (MoTA directors and inspectors, guardians, conservators, foremen, workmen, colleagues and friends, and everyone involved in preserving the Egyptian past). Thank you!

Ahmed Sallam, a conservator, works carefully to restore the decorated mud-plaster fragments discovered in the tomb to their place of origin among the damaged scenes of the walls in TT 16. These fragments and others were discovered during clearing, had been separated from the walls by time and activity associated with the houses that once were in area above the tomb, and will finally be returned to the damaged scenes (where possible) as part of the incredible conservation work taking place in the TT 16. This incredible work is partially supported by SFAR's EFIC Grant, made possible by your generous support.

The Sphinx Foundation for Archaeological Research is a proud partner of the TT16 mission at Dra Abu al-Naga and we look forward to sharing further details in the coming weeks as work continues throughout April. Please visit the Fieldwork and Projects page on our website to learn more (www.sphinxarchaeology.org).

“The Tomb of the Birds (TT16)”

Erico Peintner continues to work to resolve the layers of darkening and discoloration caused by burning during episodes of looting in the past. The second season of conservation continues this April in TT 16, with renewed focus toward cleaning and stabilizing the ceiling, walls, and restoring broken fragments to the beautiful scenes. These issues are shared by countless tombs in the Theban necropolis (modern-day West Bank of Luxor). The work is painstaking, but the results are already visible and the final result will be stunning. The “tomb of the birds” will slowly come to life and reveal a very rare and magnificent scene of birds taking flight in the vaulted ceiling.

The University of Memphis Mission to Theban Tomb 16 (now in the conservation phase of the project), directed by Dr. Suzanne Onstine, hopes to stablize and conserve the beautiful scenes found on the tomb walls and ceiling for future generations.

The Sphinx Foundation for Archaeological Research is a proud partner of the TT 16 mission at Dra Abu al-Naga and we look forward to sharing further details in the coming weeks. Please visit the Fieldwork and Projects page on our website to learn more (www.sphinxarchaeology.org).
