Access to care shouldn’t come with new barriers.

The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) has joined organizations representing OB GYNs in a joint statement opposing a CMS rule that could create new barriers to Medicaid coverage, potentially affecting millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid for care.

The consensus statement warns the rule could reduce access to care for vulnerable patients, including those with gynecologic cancers, while increasing burdens on clinicians.

Behind every board exam is a human story and deeper understanding of why we care for patients the way we do.

In this deeply personal reflection, Dr. Katherine D. Hicks Courant shares how preparing for the gynecologic oncology oral boards during a period of loss and change gave her a deeper perspective on patient care, clinical trials, and what it truly means to practice wisely.

Dr. Hicks-Courant serves on the SGO Quality Care Committee, helping advance efforts to improve patient outcomes and care quality.

Cervical cancer is preventable, and screening plays a critical role. 🔍

SGO, in partnership with ASCCP, supports updated cervical cancer screening guidelines from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) that expand access and offer more screening options, including:
• Pap (cytology) testing
• Co-testing
• Self-collected HPV testing

These evidence-based guidelines apply to everyone who has a cervix, regardless of symptoms, and are designed to make screening more accessible.

SGO remains committed to improving access to cervical cancer screening and prevention. We encourage clinicians to start the conversation with their patients about these new recommendations.

Mental health is healthcare. 💙

Burnout in gynecologic oncology is real, driven by emotional demands, time pressures, and systemic challenges. But it’s not inevitable.

By reducing stigma, encouraging open conversations, and improving access to mental health resources, we can build stronger, more supportive care environments for those who care for others every day.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s move beyond burnout, together.
