The Tikkun Olam Volunteer (TOV) Network is JUF's connection point for people who want to donate their time to help others in need. In accordance with tikkun olam, the Jewish concept of repairing the world one good deed at a time, TOV places members of the Jewish community with Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation affiliated agencies and with community service projects that need volunteers. Whether

you are interested in volunteering once a week or once a year, in the city or in the suburbs, with the elderly or with children, by tutoring or by serving food to the homeless, TOV's volunteer advisors will work hard to find the best match to meet your needs and interests.

If you joined us for the Good Deeds Day open house this year, you helped bring a beautiful mural to life. That mural is now hanging in its new home at The Selfhelp Home, where residents can enjoy its color, warmth, and the reminder that we’re all part of a community that cares. 🎨

The mural’s Tree of Life design adds an extra special touch. It’s a bright, uplifting symbol of growth and connection, and represents the many ways our community supports one another. It’s a cheerful visual that we hope brings a smile to residents every time they pass by. 🌳

A huge thank you to local artist Jodi Moll for guiding this project and helping our volunteers create something truly special. And thank you to everyone who showed up and helped make this gift possible. 😊

This June, our Mitzvah Mania volunteer opportunities are all about showing up for our community. And on Juneteenth, we’re especially mindful of what it means to take action, uplift others, and honor the ongoing work of justice and freedom. 💙

On June 19, we’re inviting volunteers to join us in hands‑on service at Cornerstone Community Outreach that reflects the spirit of the day: community care, dignity, and collective responsibility.

Whether you’re coming on your own, with friends, or as a family, our June opportunities are open to all ages and designed to make giving back simple and meaningful.

Congrats to our TOV Tutoring pairs, Jeffrey and Luis, and Maia and Savanna, on being selected for Tutoring Chicago's annual Student Voices publication!🎉 Each year, students are invited to submit their own stories, poems, and illustrations, and we are so excited to share that both Luis and Savanna had their written pieces chosen. With the encouragement and support of their dedicated tutors, they created thoughtful and creative work that reflects their growing writing skills.

This year’s honorees highlight the diversity of our TOV tutoring community. Maia, a first-year tutor, has already built a strong connection with her student, Savanna, sharing, “I had a great time tutoring Savanna. She is very bright and a fast learner… I suggested she write about something she loves to do and she loves playing softball!” At the same time, Jeffrey reflects the impact of long-term mentorship. In his third year as a tutor, he has formed a meaningful bond with Luis that extends beyond academics, including shared interests in American history and visits to the Museum of Science and Industry. Luis’ mother, Sirinrat, shared her gratitude, describing Jeffrey as “more than just a tutor… a mentor, a positive role model,” who has helped Luis grow in confidence, problem-solving, and academics. ✏💙😃

🎉Another amazing Nourish Our Neighborhoods collection drive in the books!🎉

TOV volunteers from all over Chicagoland came out on Sunday to donate over 600 school supply kits, helping Hyde Park Kenwood Food Pantry, Sinai Chicago, JCFS Chicago HIAS, Fill a Heart 4 Kids, The Ark, Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook, Sarah's Inn, and Together We Cope kick off their summer collections for the new school year. 🍎🎒✏️

The turnout was incredible and the impact will be felt by students across our city. Thank you for showing up, giving back, and proving once again what we can accomplish together!💙

What an incredible Good Deeds Day! On April 12, over 850 volunteers came together to support 33 organizations across Chicagoland, joining one of 25 different service projects. THANK YOU to every volunteer who joined TOV in repairing the world, right here in our own community. From serving meals to providing essentials to those in need, from supporting local farms to building meaningful connections, you have made a real difference. Thank you for making the 20th anniversary of Good Deeds Day so special, and we couldn't be prouder of our TOV family! ❤️

Congrats to our April Volunteer Spotlight: Jeremy Apple! We couldn't do what we do without the help of our incredible volunteers like you.

Jeremy began his journey with TOV through our monthly young adult volunteer opportunities with JUF’s Young Leadership Division. Since then, he has become a frequent volunteer through Mitzvah Mania, Good Deeds Day, the JUF Uptown Cafe, and he also serves on YLD’s Volunteer Committee. We wanted to get to know Jeremy a bit more, so he answered some of our questions below:

1. Why is it important for you to volunteer through TOV?

I like being able to contribute in a direct, hands-on way and see the impact of what I’m doing. TOV brings together people who are willing to show up and put in the effort, which makes it more meaningful and creates a real sense of community when working together on mitzvot. It’s also a nice way to represent the Jewish community in a positive light.

2. What makes volunteering meaningful for you?

That’s a tough question. Each experience has been meaningful in its own way.

Volunteering with Share Our Spare, which provides essential items for children and families, stood out. It gave me a clearer understanding of how many families in Chicago live at or near the poverty line, and how much of a difference providing basic necessities like diapers can make.

3. What fictional world or place would you like to visit?

I’d go with a Studio Ghibli world, like Spirited Away. They are a little strange in a good way, and the food always looks amazing.

We are so lucky to have Jeremy as part of our TOV family! To learn more about JUF's important work in the community, sign up to volunteer, or make a donation in Jeremy’s honor, please visit our website: https://www.juf.org/tov/
