Public Art Chicago

Public Art Chicago Connecting Chicago Public Art to the World
Find out how: http://www.publicartchicago.org/ It is an unrecognized city, state and national resource.

Chicago's collection of public art is just as important and as astounding as its architecture. It is a vast collection, quite possibly the largest in the United States, numbering in the thousands of objects. The collection, comprising art owned by multiple departments of the city, the State of Illinois, the Federal Government, corporations, civic organizations, foundations, churches, condominiums,

colleges, universities, individuals and other entities, makes Chicago truly a living - and free - Museum Without Walls. Public Art Chicago will create a critical resource for study, for touring, for simply enjoying great art in an urban context. Our intent is to make our data the definitive source of information on Chicago’s public art. Our plan is not merely to identify. We propose to provide curated information on each object, each artist, and the context of each object, placing it historically and aesthetically, as well as its relationship with other art and with the neighborhood in which it is located. The Public Art Chicago team welcomes public art fans, students, historians and scholars of all stripes who want to participate building this great resource.

Meštrović's "The Bowman" and "The Spearman" remain on prominent display in Chicago despite a simmering controversy about them (and other works). Those who feel that the sculptures appropriate Native American culture and misrepresent it seem not to have made any effort to appreciate Meštrović's thought process and intentions, about which I've written (see comment below)
