TEDxWrigleyville Tickets available to attend our 2024 event Unlocking Discourse on Aug 27th at the Chicago Cultural Center.

“Humanity: The Repatriation” streams on back to back nights, August 25th and 26th. We have been ripped apart from one another in every way in the last year by disease, economics, race, politics, and beyond. “Humanity: The Repatriation,” will showcase the return home that 2021 represents. That return takes many forms and shapes, but at its core re-connection is what we all longed for throughout 2020.

Kim Greene Hiller explores how adopting an “improv mindset” can transform our ability to communicate, collaborate, and strengthen democracy. Drawing on the work of Viola Spolin, the mother of improvisational theater, Hiller highlights how active listening, embracing creativity, and finding common ground are essential for successful dialogue. Whether in business, personal relationships, or civic engagement, Hiller demonstrates how improv’s ‘yes, and’ thinking and ‘got your back’ ritual foster understanding, build trust, and help us navigate diverse perspectives in democratic societies. Through practical examples and heartfelt stories, she encourages us to approach every conversation with empathy, intention, and a shared goal. Kim Green Hiller, Founder and Head Teacher at the Laughing Academy, earned her improv comedy pedigree from Chicago’s lauded Second City Conservatory, where her teachers included Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. Kim also studied under improv legends Del Close and Charna Halpern at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic (iO), sharing the stage with classmates Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

n this powerful TEDx talk, Matt Hay shares his inspiring journey of resilience and innovation after losing his hearing to Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), a rare neurological disorder. Faced with a life-changing decision between saving his hearing and his life, Matt chose survival but embarked on an extraordinary process to reclaim sound through an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI). His “irrational persistence” led him to defy expectations, not only restoring his connection to vital life sounds but also rediscovering the joy of music and communication. Matt’s story highlights the remarkable adaptability, the power of persistence, and the profound impact of embracing new challenges with courage. This talk is an inspiring testament to human resilience and the pursuit of seemingly impossible goals. Matt Hay, has a long journey toward deafness and even longer journey toward learning to “hear” again with an experimental brainstem implant. He first publicly shared his story on a National Public Radio podcast titled Soundtrack of Silence. The intimate, funny and authentic peek at what it’s like to start a career, fall in love and build a life while battling a rare disease inspired actor Channing Tatum and Paramount Pictures to option the motion picture rights to Matt’s life story. Matt’s memoir Soundtrack of Silence was released in January 2024 by St. Martin’s Press, an imprint of Macmillan. It immediately earned a spot as an Amazon Best Seller within the Disability category. When Matt isn’t adding tracks to the soundtrack of his life, he passionately supports the hearing loss community as a member of the Columbia University Genetic Counseling Advisory Board and previously as a consultant to the St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf.

We’re thrilled to announce Kim Greene Hiller, owner and director of The Laughing Academy and former actress and writer with Second City Chicago. Kim teaches life skills through the art of improvisation. Having shared the stage with comedy legends like Tina Fey and Steve Carell, Kim brings a wealth of experience to her teachings.

In her talk, Kim opens with emphatic gibberish to illustrate how intention can be understood without clear language, a technique rooted in improvisational theater. She discusses Viola Spolin’s contributions to improv, emphasizing the importance of intuitive communication and the transformative power of the “Yes, and” principle, which fosters creativity, collaboration, and trust. Through personal anecdotes and examples from her work teaching children and adults, including corporate training sessions for Fortune 500 companies, Kim demonstrates how listening for intention and embracing the spirit of improvisation can enhance communication, build stronger relationships, and create meaningful, supportive interactions in all aspects of life.

We are thrilled to present Rebecca Davis, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba, as a 2024 speaker. Rebecca employs quantum mechanical models and experimental organic chemistry to tackle challenges in molecular design and discovery.

In her talk, Rebecca uses the image of a molecule to demonstrate how science embodies the greatest aspects of humanity, such as our ability to imagine, explore, and extrapolate. She highlights the field of quantum chemistry, explaining how it has evolved from early 19th-century atomic theories to today’s advanced computational models that predict molecular behavior and structures. Through examples of molecular movement, interactions, and reactions, Rebecca illustrates how scientific progress, driven by human creativity and curiosity, continually advances our understanding and improves the world, emphasizing that even though we can’t see molecules, our collective efforts have made the invisible realm tangible and transformative.
