American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - ABOMS The only ADA recognized certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States.

The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) is the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States and is recognized and approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Overseen by an eight-member Board of Directors, the mission of ABOMS is to ensure that Diplomates meet our standards of training, education, and professionalism through our certification process. As the certifying body in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the ABOMS provides contemporary and innovative programs that promote optimal care and service to the public. Our certification process assures the public that certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons have successfully completed a rigorous peer evaluation process by requiring surgeons to present and maintain appropriate professional credentials, and demonstrate the requisite training, experience and knowledge.

Congratulations to the newly appointed ABOMS Director, Edward Lahey, DMD, MD, FACS.

Dr. Lahey’s leadership with ABOMS began on the Examination Committee and most recently as Co-Chair for the 2025 and 2026 administrations of the Oral Certifying Examination.

He will serve an 8-year term on the Board of Directors. We look forward to his many contributions to the organization and specialty.

Dr. Wong dedicated nearly four decades to advancing oral and maxillofacial surgery through his leadership, service, research, education, and mentorship. His impact on the profession and the countless individuals he guided will be remembered for generations to come.

🔹 Be an Active Diplomate in good standing for at least three years
🔹Pledge to maintain confidentiality and adhere to all policies and restrictions
🔹Demonstrate contemporary knowledge of the specialty
🔹Provide two referrals from active Diplomates, including at least one current or former Examination Committee member
🔹Have no former or pending actions against dental or medical license
