Overseen by an eight-member Board of Directors, the mission of ABOMS is to ensure that Diplomates meet our standards of training, education,

and professionalism through our certification process. As the certifying body in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the ABOMS provides contemporary and innovative programs that promote optimal care and service to the public. Our certification process assures the public that certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons have successfully completed a rigorous peer evaluation process by requiring surgeons to present and maintain appropriate professional credentials, and demonstrate the requisite training, experience and knowledge.

We are celebrating 80 years of ABOMS!

Founded in 1946, the organization, originally named the American Board of Oral Surgery, was established with the mission of conducting examinations for the certification of specialists in oral surgery.

Eighty years later, ABOMS remains dedicated to that mission while continuing to advance the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and champion the importance of Board Certification to the public.

Today, we are honored to serve surgeons at every stage of their professional journey, including:

🔹403 Candidates
🔹6,255 Active Diplomates
🔹45 Certificants of the Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery CAQ
🔹43 Certificants of the Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery (Cleft and Craniofacial) CAQ
🔹3,207 Retired Diplomates

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on eight decades of service to the specialty and express our gratitude to the thousands of surgeons whose commitment to excellence has helped shape the organization.
