Action Corps Illinois

Action Corps Illinois Action Corps champions justice, in solidarity with people most affected by climate disasters and viol We choose to persevere and continue our mission.

Nine years ago, Brian Rawson, working for Oxfam America, founded the Oxfam Action Corps as a global advocate for those who weren’t being heard. The Oxfam Action Corps aimed to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice. Oxfam Action Corps embodied the campaigns and efforts of Oxfam America’s work. Our volunteer organizers across the United States have lobbied our elected officials in natio

nwide efforts, campaigned in our communities for international food companies to improve their policies, and canvassed to educate and empower. Hundreds of lobby visits were conducted, tens of thousands of signatures were collected, and over twenty campaigns were championed, all culminating in an unstoppable momentum of people power. Equally important are the relationships fostered through our efforts. As we grew our networks, we strengthened our forces to mobilize for human rights. Recently Oxfam announced that in response to changing global realities, Oxfam is restructuring internationally, which means the end of the official Oxfam Action Corps program; however, we the volunteers and grassroots organizers choose to continue and expand upon our work under a new a banner: Action Corps. As we embark on this new chapter, we commit to creating positive change in our world and believe we can end poverty in our lifetime regardless of the challenges we may face. We ask each of you to continue to stand for global economic justice and the human right to food. Whatever your background, career, ethnicity, gender...join us in our mission -- We are Action Corps.

Your support has enabled us to hire our first Action Corps coordinator, Neda Saleh, a Yemeni-American college student and peace activist. Neda was born in Yemen and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area where she started her advocacy work volunteering for the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation, a Yemeni-run nonprofit organization that provides direct aid to Yemenis in need. As Action Corps' coordinator, Neda is supporting organizers around the United States, leading our social media, and coordinating coalition work.

Please consider making a gift today in support of grassroots organizers in your community advocating for global justice. Keep reading to learn more about Neda.

In her time with the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation, Neda began advocating for the end to war in and on Yemen. She began an Instagram page with some friends called where she simplified news articles on Yemen to an Instagrammable format to raise awareness.

Soon after creating , Neda connected with Action Corps and the Stop the Blockade Coalition that Action Corps leads. The coalition includes 15 U.S. organizations calling for an end to U.S. participation in the war. At an Action Corps California meet-up, Neda brought friends and family, and planned a rally outside of Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA)’s office. Two weeks later, they brought out 20 allies and constituents to his Santa Clara office to call for the reintroduction of a War Powers Resolution for Yemen. That same day, the group secured a meeting with the congressman to discuss their request.

A few weeks later, Neda planned an event outside the office of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, bringing together over 70 allies, and collecting dozens of signed letters to different representatives across the Bay Area demanding an introduction of a War Powers Resolution for Yemen. That action sparked local interest in Yemen, and soon after, Neda and the group planned a vigil in San Francisco marking the day 40 children were killed by a Saudi bombing of a school bus. Over 100 people attended and mourned the lives lost.

Since then, as one of Action Corps' first staff members, Neda is supporting organizers in their advocacy efforts, helping inspire people to organize locally in solidarity with people facing the 3 C's of Climate crisis, COVID, and Conflict around the world. She looks forward to connecting with you!

Your generous support has allowed us to hire Neda. In honor of National Day of Giving, please support our continued work in solidarity with the people of Yemen, Burma, and people everywhere dealing with the climate crisis and COVID.

Myanmar produces more than 90% of the world’s rubies and jade, and these stones command the highest prices on the international market. Because it dominates Burma's gemstone industry, the Myanmar military profits when high-end jewelry retailers – like Harry Winston (owned by Swatch) – buy Burmese gems for their collections.

Today, let's take three actions to hold Harry Winston - and its owner Swatch - to account,.

Please join me in signing this petition demanding that Harry Winston end its purchase of gems from Burma that profit the Burmese military! No !
