Little People, Big Problems Speaker Series 📣

Meet Brad Dorng ! Brad is lecturing on a review of pediatric rapid sequence intubation medications.

Tell us a little about the topic you’re speaking about.

Choosing the best medications for a pediatric intubation can be challenging. Often it is emergent, chaotic, and we may not have the entire background information about the child's condition. The medications we use to facilitate a successful and safe intubation are crucial, therefore, understanding the mechanism of action, dosing, and most importantly side effects and contraindications is important to our practice.

What made you choose your current field of medicine?

During my time as a Transport Team nurse at Lurie, part of our yearly training required hands on airway management skills in the operating room with anesthesiologists and CRNAs. I fell in love with the complexity and art of anesthesia. The combination of critical thinking, hands on skills, and tailored individualized patient care was similar to Transport medicine and allowed for me to further my degree and education.

What is your favorite part about working with children and their families?

Pediatric patients are fragile but extremely resilient. Providing care to children and their families can be complex due to various physiological and developmental needs, but I love it! Being able to make a scary experience less stressful for the child and their family is extremely important to me.

What's the best advice you've ever received in your career?

You learn something new everyday! Never be afraid to ask questions and ALWAYS seek out opportunities to grow and become better.

What have you learned from working in the field of pediatric transport?

It is so important to remain calm in the chaos when the entire room is looking at you to be the leader. Take a deep breath, trust your training, and be confident in the decisions that you make.

We’re not a regular ambulance, we’re a cool ambulance 😎

We asked transport nurse Meg what she keeps in her pockets - since everyone does it a little differently. And here’s what she had to say!

Spring team events 🌷

🌼Mia went to Grenada as a part of the Lurie Children’s Healing Hands Global Health Partnership. The program’s mission is to provide pediatric nursing expertise to underserved communities while building cultural knowledge of self and others. She worked at Saint George’s General hospital, St George’s clinic, visited Queen Elizabeth home for children and Program for Adolescent mothers (PAM). (Photos 1-5)

🌼JVV went to Orange Beach, Alabama for CCTMC. CCTMC is a critical care transport conference with providers from all over the country. A few sessions she attended were pediatric sepsis, pediatric stroke, newborn metabolic acidosis, DKA and ethics. It was a great time on the beach and she got to connect with other providers in the Chicagoland area (UCAN, Lifenet McHenry and Lifestar)! (Photos 6-9)

🌼 Wallis & Nikki participated in the Touch a Truck event at Morton Arboretum. They had a great turnout and got to show off our ambulance and teach the community about transport! (Photos 10-12)

🌼Jenn Fortson & Zak participated in a career fair for students of Chicago Public Schools CTE Health Science Programs.
CPS provides specialized CTE training designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health. At the transport station students learned about how the team monitors and cares for patients between other hospitals and Lurie Children’s Hospital. (Photos 13-14)

Part of operations at UCAN is helping our neighboring transport teams when they need us! If there is a critically ill pediatric patient in need of air ambulance service, we will help get them to the appropriate facility as safely and efficiently as we can!

Thank you for your partnership, Lurie’s! 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

🌟 Say hello to Isaiah, one of our newest nurses officially finishing orientation! 🎉

Isaiah’s called a lot of places home — from Massachusetts and Phoenix to St. Louis and D.C. and now — Chicago. 💙

Outside of work, Isaiah’s all about balance: yoga, anime, beach days, great music (Sade is a fav!), and time with friends (plus two adorable family schnoodles, Rosie and Lacey 🐾).

Best trip ? Going to Rio for Carnival was transformative

Latest adventure? Scuba diving! Always up for exploring new depths, on land and underwater. 🌍🤿

We’re so excited to have you on the team, Isaiah!

🎉 Please help us congratulate Jess on completing orientation!

After living in Portland, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Vancouver — she’s now calling Chicago home! When she’s not caring for patients, you can catch her lifting, running with her sweet rescue pup Pippa, or checking out a new pilates or happy hour spot around town.

A lover of EDM (Two Friends, Gryffin, John Summit, and more 🎶), her best vacation was a Las Vegas concert weekend where she reconnected with an old friend from 10 years ago — talk about full circle moments!

Fun fact: she was even an extra in a film with Tom Holland 👀 and can speak Mandarin!

We’re so happy to have your energy, kindness, and adventurous spirit on our team. Jess — welcome aboard! 💙
