Little People, Big Problems Speaker Series 📣
Meet Brad Dorng ! Brad is lecturing on a review of pediatric rapid sequence intubation medications.
Tell us a little about the topic you’re speaking about.
Choosing the best medications for a pediatric intubation can be challenging. Often it is emergent, chaotic, and we may not have the entire background information about the child's condition. The medications we use to facilitate a successful and safe intubation are crucial, therefore, understanding the mechanism of action, dosing, and most importantly side effects and contraindications is important to our practice.
What made you choose your current field of medicine?
During my time as a Transport Team nurse at Lurie, part of our yearly training required hands on airway management skills in the operating room with anesthesiologists and CRNAs. I fell in love with the complexity and art of anesthesia. The combination of critical thinking, hands on skills, and tailored individualized patient care was similar to Transport medicine and allowed for me to further my degree and education.
What is your favorite part about working with children and their families?
Pediatric patients are fragile but extremely resilient. Providing care to children and their families can be complex due to various physiological and developmental needs, but I love it! Being able to make a scary experience less stressful for the child and their family is extremely important to me.
What's the best advice you've ever received in your career?
You learn something new everyday! Never be afraid to ask questions and ALWAYS seek out opportunities to grow and become better.
What have you learned from working in the field of pediatric transport?
It is so important to remain calm in the chaos when the entire room is looking at you to be the leader. Take a deep breath, trust your training, and be confident in the decisions that you make.
