It’s been a rough week. So we’re spreading a lil’ joy with the news that “So There’s This Girl” has been selected for the 3rd Annual Cariño Festival de Cine in our hometown Chicago!

It will play next Friday, Nov 15th (6-9 pm) at the OPEN Center for the Arts alongside nine other youth shorts. In this film, written & directed by Isis Gullette, a Black q***r teen struggles to admit the truth of her feelings to her best friend before they leave for college.

Drop some love in the comments for Isis Gullette and the rest of the Become a Filmmaker team— Allison Peevy, Cassie Llanas, Katlynne Carey, Serena Philips and Stephanie Meeks!! What an honor to have their work play again on the big screen! And definitely let us know if you plan on coming by to support!! 🎬🍿

Bringing Diversity to Filmmaking

In partnership with the Chicago Housing Authority, DePaul University delivers a summer intensive documentary filmmaking course providing sixteen underserved high school girls with new economic pathways and the tools to share their voices with the world. Through two lenses—the lens of a camera and the lens of their life experiences—students master technical filmmaking skills and learn the power of their personal narratives. During the paid, six-week program, participants receive training, mentorship, industry talks, and experiential field trips exploring Chicago’s rich arts culture. Working in teams, students create an original documentary on social topics important to them. These short films have gone on to win multiple festival awards across the country. Our page allows us to share information about special screenings. It also allows us to stay connected to program alumni and friends so that they are aware of opportunities to stay engaged in the filmmaking community.
