Earlier this week many activists, organizations, and individuals around the world honored the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. Unfortunately, this was not the only bomb dropped by the United States on Japan. In fact, 3 days after the initial bombing of Hiroshima, a second bomb was dropped on the predominantly residential community of Nagasaki, Japan. Survivors and victims of Nagasaki are often overlooked due to propaganda and the selling of these two separate historical events as a single act of war.

The posts provided by NEIS this week are just a brief summary of these events and provide several resources that can tell this story better than we ever could, the stories of survivors. I encourage all to seek out these resources and learn about the ways in which the experiences of these events differ as we combat looking at these events not just as an act of war but a human experience.

On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Thousands of citizens endured unimaginable suffering at the debt of world leaders. War is perhaps one of the most grim and self destructive flaws of man and heavily weighs on the minds of citizens as we enter a global era of uncertainty. Nuclear war never is or has been a solution. Remember the people.

July 16th is a bleak reminder of nuclear injustice and the disproportionate effects nuclear power has historically had on Hispanic and Indigenous communities in the hands of the nuclear industry. Both the Trinity Nuclear Test and the Church Rock Uranium Mill Spill resulted in detrimental health impacts that led to the loss of indigenous lives. Despite the impact of these two separate events occurring on July 16th, estimated to have affected over 500+ million individuals combined, it remains a disturbing secret of American history. What is being shared is merely a small piece of the puzzle that is nuclear injustice history and we urge individuals to continue to seek out resources and learn.
