BIG WIN! After *years* of advocacy, the IL General Assembly just passed SB3772, making historic progress for Illinois’ Environmental Justice (EJ) communities.

✅ Now, Illinois will have our first-ever legal framework for putting the needs of EJ communities ahead of big polluters’ agenda.

Here is how this landmark legislation helps our most polluted neighborhoods:

📣 EJ communities are typically low-income communities of color with high concentrations of industry, where air pollution can contribute to 5% of premature deaths and where asthma rates can reach 20% to 30% of children.

📊 SB3772 requires a cumulative impact analysis before new air permits are granted, evaluating the total combined pollution burden rather than looking at one facility in isolation.

🛑 If an assessment shows harmful impacts, the IEPA must consider changes before granting permits, allowing for tougher rules like improved air monitoring, fugitive dust controls, and increased testing.

As Jen Walling, CEO of IEC, put it: "This is a significant and meaningful step forward for communities who simply want clean air to breathe, and our work to secure that basic human right continues. We hope to secure greater protections for more communities in the future and the passage of the Hazel M. Johnson Cumulative Impacts Ordinance in Chicago.”

BIG BIG thank you to our incredible bill sponsors State Representative Lilian Jiménez and State Senator Celina Villanueva! We couldn't have done this without you, of course.

Special s/o to leaders on Governor JB Pritzker team, like Deputy Governor Bria Scudder and former Deputy Governor Christian Mitchell, IEPA Director James Jennings, and their policy teams for getting this done with us.

WE ARE OFFICIALLY PUTTING THE CITY ON NOTICE! Ford City Mall is closing and they want to rezone it from "B3-2 Community Shopping District" to a "M2-2 Light Industry District". Instead of investing in people and doing the right thing, they'd rather build an industrial park and compromise our health and way of living. I'm asking for everyone's help especially if your alderman is on the Zoning Committee.
Learn more about what's happening by coming to our next public meeting on June 9th!

American robin numbers are believed to be down across the Midwest and much of the country. An avian ecologist says what’s known about changes in the robin population should serve as a “massive warning bell.”

GRAPHIC⛔️⛔️CW: Bird in distress

Yesterday had an interesting turn of events and an expected whirlwind of stress, anxiety, and triumph!!

1st up around 8am in the morning, (pics 2&3) reported a distressed Black Crowned Night Heron caught in fishing line at Marquette Park. 2nd I was made aware of this by Amy from project. 3rd I started calling for eyes and boots on the ground and contacted and staff about the bird-mergency.

4th surprisingly and super random, folks from the Chicago Park District River Lab were passing by on a canoe 🛶 (they were happening to do their test run for our joint kayak clean up later this summer 😭) and they had eyes from the water!!!

5th Tony Rodriguez, an arborist from Openlands was dispatched and equipped with a pole saw!! He was able to free the bird but it had scurried away before they could secure it!!
6th Finally and thankfully Sarah Slayton and Nora Lloyd from arrived on the scene and tracked the bird northbound and were able to capture the injured bird. It was then taken to a wildlife rehab facility to check its condition and the extent of its injuries 😢

This was a labor of compassion between several different community groups and members!!! It couldn’t have happened any differently and this is a reminder we must ALL answer the call to show up for our wildlife and the the environment ♥️🌎

Reminder if you live near one of our parks with a pond or lagoon don’t be afraid to pick up trash 🚮 because it could save a life. People are ignorant and don’t think their actions affect others‼️ I’ve been ringing the alarm for over 2 years and even made signage to post around the park!! Even then we still have problems 🙄

I’m also calling for adequate fishing line disposals at Marquette Park and also remind folks to pick up after their d*mn selves!!! So many animals can get caught by trash in the water 🌊🦆🎣 and they shouldn’t have to deal with this crap at all!!

Thank you and everyone. What a busy morning and afternoon. I hope to keep you updated about the status of the bird. TY ✌🏼☮️
