Humane education teaches a great many things. Leadership, compassion, critical thinking, empathy, selflessness, and how to put ideas into action for the benefit of others. Another big thing that humane education teaches? Gratitude.

So, how does humane education inspire students to practice gratitude? One of our first lessons in our Humane Living Program is always about child labor.

We couldn't be more impressed by the example of active citizenship displayed by our students at CICS Lloyd Bond. They wrote letters to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to ask them to end child labor here in the United States.

In honor of Earth Day we put together a collection of fun and eco-friendly activities you can do with kids. Whether it’s making art out of trash, thinking up creative uses for the paper that normally gets tossed in the recycling bin, or re-imagining the plastic water bottle, we’ve got great activities for you.

The American Association of University Women invited HEART to speak at its April meet up. Participants learned to look through the lens of empathy and compassion when making everyday choices. They were most surprised to learn about the connection between child slavery and chocolate. Are you surprised by the connection?

One wonders with a title as ‘provocative’ as this, what’s to follow; regrettably, nothing more than a truthful and bitter tale of greed and child slave-labour, mainly because of what I like to call “The Chocolate Wars”. These corporate battles have been going on for quite some time, and are still, m...

We'd like to thank Moomah Magazine for recognizing the important and powerful work the HEART does. In correlation with Earth Day, they dedicated their monthly "Make Nice Mission" to our Environmental Ethics program. In their online magazine they wrote, "[HEART's] lessons were so well laid out and inspiring. We encourage you and your kids to partake in some of these great lessons and projects in your own home or even bring them to your classrooms."

Moomah the Magazine is a humorous, irreverent, beautiful place online for parents to discover and share the joys and perils of parenthood.

In this activity, students learn that their personal choices regarding single-use plastic do not have to be harmful to people, animals, and the environment. They learn that their choices to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE can result in a win-win alliance that allows for the most good and causes the least harm.
