Coconut coir isn't everything it's cracked up to be, in terms of "sustainability." Don't want to use peat moss? Use compost, either your own home-grown mix, vermicompost, or a good local commercial variety (I like Chalet Garden Center's "leaf mulch," made from composted leaves collected by their yard service division - it's a multi-tasker). Garden expert and bona fide Science Guy Robert Pavlis pokes some holes in the Coconut Coir Mythology:

Coir, coir pith and coir peat have been proposed as substitutes for peat moss. Is coir sustainable? Is it more environmentally friendly than peat moss?
