Art Teachers Redefined

Art Teachers Redefined ART TEACHERS REDEFINED is the result of the displaced art teachers long, drawn out battle against the CPS system.

During the summer of 2010, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), under the corporate management leadership of CEO Ron Huberman, gave local principals the unlimited power to dismiss 1,289 tenured teachers without due process. Despite the fact that over 95% of the teachers had previously received “excellent” or “superior” ratings, to the media and public, these dismissed teachers were painted with the b

road brush of “unsatisfactory”. They drew from the pain and anger of home foreclosures, bankruptcy, crushing medical bills, lack of insurance and loss of respect in the community. They drew from the trauma of being terminated ̶ unable to work in their chosen profession. But as creative people, they redefined what it is and continues to be for them as artist, teacher and now arts education advocate. ART TEACHERS REDEFINED is an exhibit of the art teachers’ frustration toward a system that has forgotten its educational mission. But it is also the artists' hope the show serves to demonstrate that art -- as the art teachers -- can proffer insight and inspiration to the educational community in the midst of the conflict and crisis.

So many teachers have been let go again at CPS. Another "Bloodbath" as some news stations have called it has occurred. A few of our friends who were hit hard the last time again are without jobs. In solidarity with our teacher friends we are trying to organize another show to inform, express, and console. If any artists or educators would like to join us please contact us here. I would love for any one in the video arts who is interested in doing a documentary to contact us as well. I feel this would be a compelling story to tell.

We knew it all along...

Highly creative people often seem weirder than the rest of us. Now researchers know why

If you're wondering what Chicago teachers are up against, it's this. The downright idiocy of a system that doesn't know how to administer its teachers. How can the residents of Chicago trust that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is doing right by its students, when they don't do right by its teachers?!? Clean out CPS of patronage, corruption and greedy interests, then let's talk of true reform.

We're looking forward to the prospect of collaborating with art teachers from the Milwaukee teachers union and staging our show in Milwaukee. We stand united with you Wisconsin!

Personal grind from Cezar: This bit of news was on Fox last night. This was Gina Baruch's former school. Had she still been working there, she would have turned these supplies into an art project for the kids. Instead the principal, closed the entire art program. I guess the principal thought art was just as disposable as the other costly and usable resources dumped under her leadership and administration.

At a time when Chicago Public Schools are struggling for money, residents might be surprised by what FOX Chicago News found in the dumpster behind one school on the Northwest Side.

Met Nathan Saunders, the President of the Washington [DC] Teachers Union at the "National Conference to Fight Back for Public Education". Talked to him about the possibility of having the WTU host "Art Teachers Redefined." Keep your fingers crossed, we might be headed for a road trip. Whoo-hoo!

Daniela mounts her new works (the "Fig Tree" series) at the Flat Iron Arts Building. Hope you can drop by the Flat Iron (1579 N. Milwaukee Ave.) sometime in the month of July to see our show. Also walk around and see if there are other artists studios that are open. The building is a labyrinth filled with talented artists whose works are for sale. Check it out!

We're so popular, we're exhibiting in two locations in July: The Flat Iron Arts Building and The First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple. How exciting! I hope that you can visit at least one of the two exhibits. They're great! :-)
