On August 19th, LVI Jumpstart staff hosted its long-awaited end of year tutor appreciation event at the Morton Arboretum! On a lovely evening, surrounded by nature, with thoughtful conversations on engaging students and reflecting on this year, we enjoyed music from a local band, the Throwbacks featuring 50’s & 60’s tunes. Our longtime volunteer, Connie joined other attendees showing off some great moves! We appreciate each of you!

On July 30th, Literacy Volunteers of Illinois attended the annual Night of 1,000 stars, hosted by one of our partners, scaleLIT as attendees celebrated the accomplishments of English learners and enjoyed performances and great company!

On July 14th, Literacy Volunteers of Illinois attended the Summer Friendraiser event at the Goose Island brewery in Fulton Market hosted by our friends at where we had an evening of good food, drinks and great company for the evening!

⚾ On July 9, LVI VOCAL AmeriCorps Members, staff, Board members, host site supervisors, and friends celebrated an incredible year of service at the Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox game.

📚 Make a Difference—Become a Literacy Tutor Today!

Just 1-1.5 hours a week can make a lasting impact.

The Jump Start program at Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) is looking for volunteers to tutor incarcerated youth one-on-one. Help with schoolwork, encourage a love of reading, and inspire confidence in a young person's future.

✨ Training and support are provided.
🕘 Tutoring takes place Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
✅ Volunteers must be 21 or older.

Working with incarcerated students is an incredibly rewarding experience and a wonderful opportunity!

Our On The Road to Literacy Conference gave tribute to past LVI Executive Director, Dorothy M. Miaso, who served in the position for over three decades, ending in her retirement in 2024. In her honor, Dorothy M. Miaso Tutor of the Year Award, reflects her years of leadership and dedication that helped build LVI into a stronger, more connected resource for adult literacy programs across the state.

LVI recognizes Tutor of the Year Award winner Robert (Curt) Maslanka from . As well as the Outstanding Tutor! Award winners: Kareem Elefrangi from , William Olsen La Fontaine from , Steven Rotter from Prairie State College, Rohan Sohini from , and Mangala Sunder from Metropolitan Asian Family Services.
