A lovely nearby nature spot in Oak Park - where the park district solved a chronic headache (flooding) and went with the flow—creating a nice wetland! Wild irises blooming now. The redwing blackbirds have been back since March 1st and are nesting. This park has paved pathways, soccer fields, a picnic pavilion, tennis/pickle ball courts and is accessible. 🌿

It’s May, Mental Health Awareness Minth-how are you taking good care of your -self? Before, during or after your workday take a stroll or gaze awhile sitting in a bench at the sky, the trees, and listen to the thousands of birds singing just because. 🐝🌸🦋💚🐞🍄‍🟫🐦 and although the cicadas have not started singing—they have come out in droves everywhere! Another fabulous nearby nature spot-collective resilience on Merrill and 70th in the South Shore community. Thank you Natalie Perkins for your generous time today telling us the story of Merrill Community Gardens 7030 S Merrill—an experiential garden with loads of events and a summer camp. As a staff person with Neighborspace, Natalie supports over 140 nature spaces in Chicago. She has led by example in her neighborhood for ten years creating this space with her neighbors and many other community partners. If you go make sure you check out the local bakery “Give me some Sugah” delicious. 🌳

Take a picnic, bike over, and bring your binoculars if you have some to one of the many Gathering Places in the Burnham Wildlife Corridor on Chicago’s south side lakefront. This one is my favorite—it’s tucked away so use your maps—and it is paradise! La Ronda Parakata. In the summer it’s a pollinator’s destination spot. Right now so many migrating songbirds.

With support from the Greater Maywood Paddljng Program and the Forest Preserves of Cook County, a group of Naturalists kayaked the Des Plaines Sunday. Did you know this paddljng program has lending kayak gear libraries? There are three along the river. Schuths Landjng here has an accessible canoe landing. We saw over 35 bird species along the River —so peaceful and gorgeous.

Columbus Park! Simply gorgeous today with over 30 species of birds, bullfrogs, spring woodland flowers of Phlox, golden Alexander, May apples, wild geranium, and more. Pathways, ponds, waterfall and a historic park on the westside. Blue line! 🐸🦋🐝🌳🌿🌸🌞 Let’s change the name of this park to honor someone or a tree? Other than Christopher Columbus whose presence on this continent detrimentally change this land and First Nation peoples.

Nearby nature spot— the Forest Preserves of Cook County headquarters! El and Bus accessible. For such a huge land- holder and caretaker, the main buildings are small and the surrounding nature has plenty to offer steps away from a busy street! Picnic tables, pathway, and native habitat. Trailside nature museum is about a mile away and well worth the side trip. Local volunteers are helping restore a woodland. Hope you get a chance to explore— it’s great for your mental health!
