Today! Mooove Voice
Loyola Park Fieldhouse
1230 W Greenleaf Ave, Chicago IL

Mooove Voice combines classical vocal techniques with fundamental Butoh exercises, exploring the physical sensations of vocal sounds in our bodies and in the space around us. We work up to group improvisational scores by playfully passing sound and movement in simple patterns. No experience necessary, all are welcome!

Led by:

Elaine Lemieux, mezzo-soprano, received Master’s and Post-Master’s degrees in Music Interpretation in Voice from the University of Montreal, Québec. Elaine has been teaching singing for more than 20 years. As a music lover and voice teacher, she feels that her responsibilities are to help young children, teenagers and adults to discover their vocal and singing abilities in a natural and healthy manner. She is the founder of VOIX-DE-VIVRE.

Sharkey (Sara) Zalek is an interdisciplinary artist. Rooted in physical investigations of the intersections of personal, ancestral, and cultural trauma, resilience, and collective transformation. Their work is intimate, raw, and poetic. They make the lived moment stand at attention through performance, workshops, and poignant everyday moments to encourage thoughtful interpersonal connection. They have performed and curated festivals and workshops at the Chicago Cultural Center, High Concept Labs, Elastic Arts, Experimental Sound Studio, Links Hall, Lumpen Radio, dfbrl8r, Boston Center for the Arts, Urban Guild in Kyoto, Japan, and many more.

Mooove Voice is being shared as part of Movement Studies – a programming series investigating social and environmental transitions. This project is partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency; Ga***rd and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; Reva and David Logan Foundation; Teiger Foundation; and through in-kind support from Chicago Park District.

Saturday, we will be listening to a new composition by J. Kent, combining recordings of classical repertoire with modern horror soundtracks. The audio composition is a draft toward a live runway production. The sound work is 19 minutes long, and will be playing back on a loop throughout open hours 1-4 PM, alongside Kent's textile installation in the Audible Gallery as a part of 𝘖𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦) – a showcase of projects in and about public space. Each week, different artists are featured on the Audible Gallery sound system, amplifying work that is taking place across the City.

The photos here are from an ongoing collection by Kent, featured in their project with 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦-𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦-𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦-𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘴.

𝘖𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦) features work by Mark Alcazar Diaz, Jared Brown and AJ McClenon, Christa Donner, Eliza Fernand, J. Kent, John-Michael Korpal with Nina Montenegro, and JeeYeun Lee. This project is supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency; Ga***rd and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; Reva and David Logan Foundation; Teiger Foundation; with in-kind support from Chicago Park District.

The individual projects featured in this exhibition are a part of Navigations. Roman Susan launched Navigations during the pandemic to support artists creating expansive works in Chicago neighborhoods. Navigations are designed to be open-ended, multisensory, and widely accessible. New projects for the program are selected through open proposals. If you have an idea for a project, tell us who you are, what you do, and the experience you want to share: romansusan.org/proposals.

Warren Park Arbor Day Walk
2045 W Pratt Blvd, Chicago IL
Friday, April 24 at 6 PM

Join us on Arbor Day for the next iteration of What is a Tree? by John-Michael Korpal. This is the fourth year we've met at this spot for Arbor Day!

We are gathering at a Mother Tree in Warren Park to observe, interact, personify, and engage with the arboreal inhabitants of the park. Together we will take a sunset stroll, with refreshments and discussion at John-Michael’s neighboring studio following the outdoor event.

We begin in the northeast corner of Warren Park at 6 PM. We will then follow the park path clockwise (to the left) – come find us if you arrive later!

John-Michael Korpal creates inter-sensory works exploring the visceral shared space between art and the viewer. Korpal has exhibited throughout the Midwest, with work featured at the Grunwald Gallery of Art at the Kinsey Institute, Governor’s State University, Hyde Park Art Center, and elsewhere. Korpal has completed the Visual Art Certificate Program from Graham School-University of Chicago, and participated in the Center Program at Hyde Park Art Center. Korpal is a member of the Rogers Park Art Alliance, Chicago Calligraphy Collective, West Ridge Artists. For more info, please visit johnmichaelkorpal.com.

This event is part of the programming for 𝘖𝘯𝘦'𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦). If you aren't able to make this Friday, come visit with John-Michael at Experimental Sound Studio on Saturday, May 9 from 1-4 PM!

𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 is a new work by Zachary Nicol.

Zachary Nicol is an artist, choreographer, and performer based in Chicago. Their practice across performance, writing, and video uses research in dance, movement, site, and image to unfold problems of representation and paradox in the performing body. Their solo and collaborative work has been presented nationally and internationally, and they work regularly as a collaborator, interpreter, and dramaturg for dance and theatre.
