In 2027 the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation will create a new pathway for established periodontists to implement high-level research programs in their private practice environments. The McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists will begin with an intensive seminar: a two-and-a-half-day immersion and principal entry point into the clinician-scientist development pathway. Seminar participants will then have the option to apply for a second stage of training, the McGuire Fellowship for Clinician Scientists, a defined, year-long pathway designed to develop practicing periodontists into thoughtful clinician scientists, investigators, collaborative leaders, mentors, and lifelong stewards of evidence-based practice.

The AAP Foundation begins its 2026 award announcements with two special Charles W. Finley Grants awarded by its Board of Directors. The first grant goes to the University of Puerto Rico, which yesterday announced that it has received full accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) for its graduate program in periodontology. The program recently celebrated the graduation of its first two residents, Drs. Gian D. Lourido Martinez and Yollian Velazquez Gonzalez, who were admitted under initial accreditation in 2023. Congratulations to the new graduates and to their faculty, especially Drs. Marcelino J. Negrón Berrios and Carlos R. Quiñones, on this remarkable achievement.

The second special grant is awarded to the University of Utah in honor of its Periodontics Study Club and section head of periodontics, Dr. David Okano. Despite not having a graduate residency program in periodontology, the University of Utah fielded one of the largest PerioDash teams in 2025, the Utah Gingival Joggers, with a remarkable 63 runners participating.

Thanks to Dr. Walter E. Colón, II for the generous gift that made these special awards possible. More announcements coming throughout August and September of the Foundation's regular Charles W. Finley Grants and many other scholarships, fellowships, and awards.
