Climate Rights & Justice International reaffirms its endorsement and support of the landmark Advisory Opinion (AO) of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of States in respect of climate change, delivered on 23 July 2025.
As a registered 501(c)(3) international human rights nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we also endorse & support the United Nations General Assembly Resolution: From Legal Clarity to Collective Action, of 20 May 2026, ("Resolution").
We commend The Commonwealth Lawyers Association & LAWASIA for its support & endorsement of the AO & Resolution and we join in their call to all UN Member States and other key stakeholders to impliment and enforce the ICJ Advisory Opinion within their respective jurisdictions as outlined in their statement below.
The window of time for global accountable, and equitable climate action is closing. Extreme weather events continue to undermine human rights on a global scale, with those least responsible for the crisis, bearing the harshest consequences.
The price of inaction, denial, nonchalance and misinformation and disinformation campaigns about the reality of the climate crisis, is one that the Global Community simply cannot afford. The climate crisis is already upending lives and livelihoods. Entire cultures, history, traditions and other norms stand on the brink of erasure.
Hard earned gains in the human rights movement are regressing as the climate crisis continues to exacerbate human rights violations around the world, the effects of which are being felt by the most vulnerable and marginalized communities.
As an interconnected global community, it is incumbent on each of us whether as individuals, organizations or governments to act urgently and in unison.
