Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth

Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth offers free one-to-one tutoring to students from the Montessori School of Englewood and Bond Elementary School.

Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth channels the legal community's resources to promote mentoring and tutoring program to at-risk youth in Chicago. Through Lend-A-Hand Tutoring at the Chicago Bar Association, we offering free one-to-one tutoring to Chicago youth. We are currently tutoring students from two public charter schools: the Montessori School of Englewood and the Betty Shabazz Academy in the Gre

ater Grand Crossing community. Lend-A-Hand Tutoring has a focus on literacy. Approximately 80 percent of our volunteers are attorneys.

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 – 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗔-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Lend-A-Hand has been fortunate to have many engaging guest speakers enhance student learning. When Lend-A-Hand students were reading Greek mythology, John Kalantzis of Clifford Law Offices spoke about the Greek village of his grandparents. Afterward, the students sampled spanakopita and licorice candy.

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 – 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗔-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Lend-A-Hand has had many engaging guest speakers over the years. In fall 2017, Kwame Gymah, now with Lennon Miller, talked with students about his homeland of Ghana as part of our Passport to the World project.

𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗔-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 — Because of the pandemic, Lend-A-Hand offered remote tutoring in 2020. Dan Cotter of Aronberg Goldgehn Davis & Garmisa and his student, Xazavia, were one of our "guinea pig" pairs who tutored over the summer to test out our system.

𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗔-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 — It was a special night when 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗸𝗲 visited Lend-A-Hand in 2018. First grader Caleb Collins from the Montessori School of Englewood proudly showed off his loose tooth while tutor Andrew Stevens, now associate general counsel at G2, looked on. Today Caleb is a rising sophomore at St. Rita of Cascia High School.

𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗔-𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 — In this photo from one of LAH's very first sessions in October 2016, 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗯𝗯𝘀 tutors then-5th grader Takayla Jones from the Montessori School of Englewood. Takayla is now a student at Northern Illinois University, and Justice Cobbs serves on the Illinois Appellate Court.

We say farewell to Eirene Salvi of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard and Trisha Rich of Holland & Knight, whose terms on the Lend-A-Hand board of directors recently expired. Eirene has served Lend-A-Hand in various capacities since 2016—most recently as board president in 2024 and 2025. Trish was the first woman to host the Lend-A-Hand Spring Awards Dinner in 2024.

We appreciate their many contributions to our organization and will miss them.
