Join us for the opening of Me Amo, a solo exhibition of works by Carina Yépez TOMORROW from 12-4PM at 6212 N Clark St!!
Carina Yepez (b.1985) is Chicago, Illinois, native with family roots in Guanajuato, Mexico. She is an educator and artist. She is passionate about exploring the traditions of matriarchy and the interconnected stories of Chicago im/migrants through quilting. By using sewing as her medium, she delves into the techniques of domesticity and expresses her community’s stories with a focus on healing ancestral trauma. Her work sparks conversations about the intersection of craft and fine art through sewing and appliqué layering, honoring her culture through floral motifs in her quilts and photographic weavings.

If you could give someone in your life flowers, who would it be? Who would be honored? Whose lives are commemorated, and whose stories remain unseen?

Carina Yépez explores these questions through work that blends photography with textile traditions, reimagining photographs as tactile, layered pieces. In her solo exhibition Me Amo, Yépez exhibits a series of portrait quilts, celebrating her own family and the family of those in her community whose lives have been shaped by migration. Photos of flowers cultivated in her family’s gardens or those taken during her own travels form the backdrop of each portrait, creating an air of remembrance. Using appliqué and free-motion sewing, she draws with the sewing machine, allowing thread to trace and disrupt the portraits.

Join us for the closing reception of Ida y vuelta today 1-5 PM at PUG (6212 N Clark)!!!!!

Ida y vuelta is the product of Salvador Andrade Arévalo’s year-long residency at Pueblo Unido Gallery. Salvador Andrade Arévalo transforms the Pueblo Unido Gallery with a site-specific installation. At the center of the exhibition is Tianguis (Market), a massive itinerant sculpture - the term Andrade uses to describe his net-like compositions made from plastic produce meshes and food packaging stitched together by hand. Tianguis engulfs the gallery, transforming the space with color, texture, and light. Embedded inside the sculpture is a small assortment of Chucherías, mixed-media sculptures composed of found plastic and metal alongside an oil painting on canvas.

‘Cohete bajo el agua,’ oil on canvas, 6x4.5ft.

Join us for the opening of 中断的对话- Broken Conversations on Saturday, March 1st showcasing PUG co-director Peter Fitzpatrick’s powerful nine-year journey through China. His photographs capture connections with local communities, particularly those from immigrant and minority populations in China, while documenting the rapid urbanization shaping their lives. From remote rural areas to the evolving cityscape, Fitzpatrick’s work reveals stories of change and resilience, explored through his unique perspective as a foreigner.

This past month, Pueblo Unido Gallery partnered with Columbia College Chicago and Centro Fotografía Álvarez Bravo in Oaxaca to host a creative cultural exchange, led by Alessandro Bo , the 2024-25 Diane Dammeyer Fellow.

Students from Chicago and photographers from Oaxaca joined Bo, local artists Romina Hierro and Gerardo Mercado .merc and Columbia professor and PUG co-director Peter Fitzpatrick for a series of aesthetic walking practices along the city’s margins. The photographers explored the effects of gentrification in Oaxaca de Juárez, driven by tourism and American expatriates, and documented the urban periphery, creating an expansive archive of work.

Through collaging and journaling workshops, participants collaborated to refine the material for an upcoming artist’s publication and exhibitions in Chicago and Oaxaca. The final documentation features photographs, video footage, collages, and a publication. We are excited for a selection of this project to be exhibited at Pueblo Unido gallery this June!
