Carl Lezak Memorial Organization Celebrating and remembering the life of Carl Lezak! Carl Lezak was born in Chicago, IL. Boniface and St. Sebastian.

He was a Catholic priest in the city of Chicago, and served at churches including St. He was very active in social justice issues and the civil rights movement in the 60s. After leaving the priesthood, he continued to be involved with politics and social justice issues, working with the ACLU and even running for Alderman in Uptown. He was an avid reader and always working on writing books of his o

wn. He later moved to New Orleans, a city he adopted as his own, where he worked as a tour guide and was involved with the Degas House. He authored the book "A Damn Yankee's Guide To New Orleans", hoping to show other "Yankees" what he loved so much about New Orleans, and even convinced his own mother to move down there! A fan of trains, he traveled throughout North America on Amtrak, visiting family and friends at nearly any city Amtrak stopped in - and very often making new friends along the way! During Hurricane Katrina, Carl was missing for many days and suffered with others in the Superdome, but in typical Lezak fashion, stubbornly insisted upon returning to New Orleans as soon as possible, because of his great love of the city and his belief that it would rise from the tragedy. He died December 20, 2009 after battling Parkinson's disease.

Great news about St Boniface, one of the churches where Carl served!

Great news about St Boniface, one of the churches where Carl served!

The city congratulated neighbors on their "tireless advocacy" to preserve the Noble Square church.

As we mark the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, let's all pledge to do something in Carl's memory for someone else this week. Feel free to share your random acts of kindness!

Hello friends, today marks the 9th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Carl went missing for five days, surviving, albeit physically ill and mentally traumatized, by sheltering with others in the infamous Superdome. If Carl was alive today, I think he'd ask us to examine how we are supporting the most vulnerable people in our society, and what we can do about it. This weekend, do something for Carl - say a prayer, donate to a charity, work for a political campaign, or just do something crazy to bring joy to someone else!

Dear friends of Carl - as you may have heard, Tropical Storm Isaac is becoming a Hurricane-level storm and headed towards New Orleans, possibly making landfall on the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Please pray for the people of New Orleans, especially those who, like Carl 7 years ago, do not have the resources or ability to self-evacuate. When Carl went missing for five days post-Katrina, we eventually tracked him down to a Red Cross shelter, so if you feel inclined to donate somewhere, we recommend the American Red Cross. http://www.redcross.org/

Disaster relief at home and abroad, CPR certification and first aid courses, blood donation, and emergency preparedness. Support the American Red Cross today.
