Park No. 540 Community Garden

Park No. 540 Community Garden The Park #540 Community Garden was established in 2018 to provide a place to garden in the South Loop neighborhood and a place of beauty for all to enjoy.

It primarily serves the greater South Loop area and adjacent neighborhoods. Park 540 Community Garden is a new community garden in Chicago’s Near South Side. Our garden grew out of a need in the community for more public gardening space. The only other public community garden in the area had a wait list of over 100 people and a four year wait time for a plot! Community members banded together to s

olve this problem by starting a new community garden, and the Park 540 Community Garden was born. Park 540 Community Garden’s organizers have spent the last year planning the garden layout, raising awareness about the garden in the community, and working towards approval from the Chicago Park District and fiscal sponsorship from a local non-profit, Friends of the Park. Through the donations of garden founders, we have already raised some money to build our first plots, and we plan to break ground in spring 2018. However, because we are literally building our garden from the ground up, we are in need of more funding for our start-up costs. To that end, we would use funds from this campaign to help build more raised beds in our garden and to buy supplies to help get our garden off the ground. However, the mission of Park 540 Community Garden extends beyond simply giving its members a place to garden. We want to build a sense of community, provide a space that is inclusive, and share produce with community organizations. Once we have our garden constructed, we plan to harvest/glean any unused produce and make it available to a local soup kitchen to help feed the hungry in our community.

Many thanks to the 12 or so volunteers who brought their muscles and energy to Earth Day Cleanup 2026 at Park 540 on Saturday. Thanks to all at the
Chicago Park District and Friends of the Parks who helped organize the event citywide and supported us yesterday. Thanks also goes out to Third Ward Alderwoman Pat Dowell and staff for stopping by to cheer us on.

A belated but heartfelt thank-you to the large group of gardeners and volunteers who came out April 20 to spruce up our gardens and the surrounding Park 540.

Special thanks to our dedicated park manager Sherry B. Overton and her colleague Joe, who made sure the woodchips and equipment got to site and pitched right in to move a little of mulch.
The enthusiastic young leaders of Project Vision gave us all an energy boost as they chopped and cleared away plant debris.

The gardens look great. A little girl walking in the park told me so this morning. She grows a garden with her dad every year, so she would know!

Happy Earth Day and thank you to all who came out to help spruce up the park area. we discovered two happy surprises: the city had dropped off a load of mulch and showed up shortly after 10 am with tools, and yhere wasn’t too much trash to deal with except along the south road.

With 10-12 volunteers on hand we quickly did double duty and got the mulch spread and the trash bagged — despite a few spits of rain and sleet.

It was lovely to see some colorful spring bulbs already in bloom, too!

Many thanks to Sherry Overton for ordering the mulch and bringing supplies— and happy birthday, Sherry!

Come celebrate Earth Day and help care for Park 540. The Community Garden Group is hosting a clean-up day Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Members, neighbors, and volunteers are encouraged to join in to help pick up trash and refuse around the park. Trash bags, bins, and tools will be provided. Please bring your own gloves.

The forecast calls for rain, but unless it pours or there is lightning, we will proceed, so dress appropriately. We hope to see you there. Many hands make the clean-up go quickly.

Thanks to the Chicago Parks District for supporting this effort.
