“A great wave of unrest now settles down upon Thebes…”

To everyone who joined us at The Den Theatre, supported our artists, spread the word, donated to the ACLU of Illinois, or simply spent an evening with this story—thank you.

This production was brought to life by an extraordinary group of actors, designers, technicians, stage managers, and volunteers. We’re grateful for every person who helped make it possible.

Until the next one. ❤️

For each PTE production we choose to support an organization whose work connects to the themes and questions at the heart of the stories we’re telling. For Antigone, we’re proud to support the ACLU of Illinois.

As Antigone explores questions of power, conscience, justice, and civic responsibility, we’re honored to highlight an organization dedicated to protecting civil rights and civil liberties across Illinois.

Thank you, ACLU of Illinois, for the important work you do.

A few rehearsal moments from the room as we go into tech week — things are looking tragic in the best way possible. 😉

At Promethean Theatre Ensemble, we believe that the process of creating a play is as vital as the performance itself. Central to our mission is the conviction that abuse is not art. We are committed to fostering safe, respectful, and inclusive creative spaces for all our artists and collaborators, which we have codified in our internal Bill of Rights, Code of Conduct, and Conflict Resolution Path.

As we await the conclusion of the Jeff Committee’s internal review, expected on July 1st, we have decided that we will not be inviting the Jeff Awards Committee to adjudicate our upcoming production of Anouilh’s Antigone. Consequently, this production will not be submitted for award consideration.

Our decision reflects a commitment to our community’s well-being. It is our sincere hope that this review process will bring about a requirement for serious allegations against award nominees to be thoroughly investigated before award decisions are made, and leads to a satisfactory resolution that prioritizes the safety of Chicago theatre-makers.

Written by Jean Anouilh, Translated by Lewis Galantiere, Directed by Elaine Carlson

A timeless story of defiance, duty, and the cost of standing by your beliefs. Based on the ancient Greek tragedy and reimagined by Jean Anouilh during Nazi-occupied Paris, this powerful adaptation explores the clash between personal conscience and political power.
Two unyielding voices. One inevitable fate.
Pride and conviction collide—with devastating and inspiring consequences.
Praised for its poetic yet accessible language, sharp humor, and deeply human characters, this production brings new life to a classic that still feels urgent today.
Maybe this time, Antigone’s courage will be contagious.
