This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Class of 1996, and there is one Dolphin who should be here celebrating alongside his classmates: Brian Sleet, Class of ’96.
On Saturday, August 15, Brian will be honored with the dedication of Honorary Brian Sleet Way in the Chatham community he loved, served and called home.
Brian was a lawyer, political strategist and behind-the-scenes powerhouse in Chicago politics. He helped elect leaders, mentored young Black organizers, encouraged young people to pursue college and pushed people to think bigger about what was possible.
But titles don’t really explain Sleet.
He was the friend who showed up. The person with an open ear. He was present, dependable and genuinely cared. And somehow, he knew EVERYBODY. 😂
Brian loved Chicago, particularly the South Side. He could have taken his talent, relationships and opportunities anywhere, but he chose to build his life here, invest here, mentor here and help other people succeed here.
When Brian passed in December 2018 at just 41, stories and memories poured in from across the city. In the days that followed, one phrase came to capture just how deeply his loss was felt:

Because if you knew Sleet, you understood.
He really was Chicago. 💙
Now, a piece of the city he loved will permanently carry his name.
