Research Rewind: Three years ago, AIDPH released the report “Improving Knowledge, Comfort, and Attitudes for LGBTQIA+ Clinical Care and Dental Education.” AIDPH surveyed oral health professionals to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding LGBTQIA+ oral health. Topics addressed included perceived barriers to care and best practices. Survey responses were mixed around knowledge of the unique oral healthcare needs of LGBTQIA+ patients, and dental institutions struggle to prioritize LGBTQIA+ oral health as a core aspect of clinical training among future dental clinicians.

We're excited to share that AIDPH Board Member Brant Herman (of ) has been selected to serve on the AI and Technology Panel for the American Dental Association's Oral Health 2050 Task Force. This initiative brings together professionals across academia, dentistry, and technology to explore what oral health could look like in the future and where AI and digital health fit in. We know Brant will be an invaluable contributor to this initiative, and we look forward to seeing this work develop.

Many veterans struggle with PTSD, trauma, behavioral health conditions, increased to***co and alcohol use, and limited access to dental benefits, all of which contribute to complex oral health needs and increase the risk of adverse outcomes, including oral cancer. Join us THIS THURSDAY when we welcome Dr. Angela Settle, CEO of West Virginia Health Right, to discuss caring for Appalachia's most vulnerable population. As CEO of the state’s oldest and largest free and charitable clinic, Dr. Settle has devoted nearly three decades to serving Appalachia’s uninsured and underinsured population. Under her leadership since 2014, the clinic has grown to provide comprehensive medical, dental, vision, behavioral health, and recovery services to more than 46,500 patients annually. Angie has spearheaded innovative programs including statewide mobile medical and dental units, a mobile street medicine initiative, and a mobile teaching kitchen promoting “food as medicine.” She has integrated behavioral health into primary care, expanded clinic sites, and launched workforce development programs such as “Prepped to Serve Appalachia,” training individuals for careers in fine dining.
