SHUBUKAI (formerly FUJIMA RYU of CHICAGO)
Grandmaster Shunojo Fujima trained in the Fujima style of Japanese classical dance in Tokyo. This style of dance is known for its intricate choreography, which is prominent in current Kabuki theater productions in Japan. After teaching in Japan, he established his dance troupe in Chicago which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016. SHUBUKAI

jima Ryu of Chicago sustained a community presence for the last amazing 40 years and it is now time to evolve into the next era with a new format as a stronger arts organization. In the Japanese tradition, it is called KO RO MO G*E (衣替え). And so with renewed dedication, they redefine their commitment with the new identity of SHUBUKAI (秀舞会). Shubukai has been presenting Japanese Classical Dance in the community with both traditional as well as newer adaptations using contemporary songs/music; collaborations using creative music, or with Tsukasa Taiko and Toyoaki Shaimsen, provide continual opportunities to evolve the traditional art while preserving the cultural aesthetic. Grandmaster Shunojo's - Grandmaster Yoshinojo Fujima continues the ongoing mission of preserving the traditional teachings and movements of Japanese Classical Dance while maintaining the traditional aesthetic. She assists at the school and instructs students of all ages and backgrounds in individual lessons at the Japanese American Service Committee(JASC) studio, and performs/creates contemporary works as well. In addition to annual student recitals, the Fujima dancers perform regularly for civic and cultural events, for educational organizations, and for various festivals in the area.
