Chicago Sculpture International

Chicago Sculpture International Chicago Sculpture International (CSI) is an affiliate organization of the International Sculpture Center (ISC).

Interpreting Life Through Sculpture for Everyone

In the early 1980s, a cooperative of sculptors created an exhibition on Chicago’s Navy Pier, featuring numerous outdoor sculptures. Inspired by this exhibition’s public appreciation, the cooperative continued to display sculptures around the city. In 2004, the group formed Chicago Sculpture International; founding members are Nicole Beck, Bob Emser

, Terry Karpowicz, Christine Rojek, Tom Scarff and Barry Tinsley. Chicago Sculpture International was the first recognized chapter of the International Sculpture Center, which publishes Sculpture Magazine and supports sculptors through exhibitions, conferences, and funding opportunities. Currently, Chicago Sculpture International includes over 200 local, national and international members. Chicago Sculpture International organizes multiple indoor and outdoor exhibitions annually to showcase contemporary sculpture throughout the Midwest. These have included exhibits at Chicago’s International Art Expo, Oakton Community College, and the Elks National Memorial. Outdoor exhibitions are often in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, exhibiting sculpture in parks and conservatories throughout the city, including venues such as the Lincoln Park Zoo. Sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, in conjunction with the Chicago Park District, Chicago Sculpture International exhibited work on the city’s boulevards over the last few years. While hosting the 23rd International Sculpture Conference in 2012, Chicago Sculpture International installed sixty-four sculptures spanning the lakefront from Promontory Point on the south to Belmont Harbor on the north. The Chicago Tree Project was created in partnership with the Chicago Park District in the summer of 2014. This citywide plan invites sculptors to transform dying trees into vibrant public art. The Chicago Tree Project, along with countless other exhibitions, serves as a vital part of Chicago Sculpture International’s mission: to bring sculpture to the community.

Join us this Friday, June 5th from 6-9 pm for the Opening Reception of "Abstract Expressions" at CSI Project Space

"Abstract Expressions" explores the raw, unfiltered language of gesture, color, and movement—where emotion takes form beyond representation and meaning emerges through instinct rather than depiction. Influenced by the bold innovations of artists such as Willem de Kooning, whose restless surfaces redefined the boundaries of abstraction, the pieces in this exhibition embrace tension, rhythm, and spontaneity. In these artworks, control and chaos coexist, echoing the human condition in all its vulnerability and force. Abstract Expressions is not about what is seen, but what is felt—an immersive encounter with the energy of creation itself, emotion made visible.

THREE COMMISSION OPPORTUNITIES
with Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program

The Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program of the Capital Development Board is pleased to announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to Illinois professional artists to create permanent original public art for three Illinois Department of Transportation Rest Areas located in Central and Southern Illinois.

Coalfield Rest Area Project
Location: Interstate 55 Southbound, Waggoner, Illinois
(30 mi. south of Springfield

Project Objective: The visibility of the Rest Areas offers a powerful platform to communicate and connect travelers to central Illinois' unique cultural landscape. The artwork should
further enhance the coal country theme. Though each large granite wall is irregular in shape, roughly 10 x 16 feet, the artist can decide how much of each wall is utilized for the installation. The artist can decide if all four works are identical, varied, or a
combination. Artists are not limited to a specific media. The artwork locations are under large overhanging roofs, but will still be exposed to the elements. The artwork must be durable and safe with limited annual maintenance as well as meet regulations

Semi-finalist stipend: $1,500
Project Budget: $82,000

Submission Deadline: April 29, 2026, 3:00PM

Farmland Rest Area Project
Location: Farmland Rest Area (Northbound and Southbound locations), Interstate 74 at Mile Marker 156, Farm City, Illinois

Project Objective: The artwork site at each rest area is highly visible located at the center of the lobby atop a custom, three-sided bench. Artists are not limited to a specific medium or
style for these sculptural artworks, but should continue the Illinois farm theme. Each artwork can be identical, varied, or a combination. Power will be run up through the benches to illuminate the artwork from within. In order for visitors to have a clear line of site within the rest areas, the artwork must be 18” in height or less. Lastly, the artwork must be durable and safe with limited annual maintenance as well as meet regulations of
the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Illinois Accessibility Code.

Semi-Finalist stipend: $1,000
Project budget: $40,000

"Pictures of You"
Group Exhibit at Bridgeport Art Center
Exhibition runs through March 6, 2026

"Pictures of You" is a juried group exhibit about portraiture, including CSI members Michele Corazzo, Set Gozo, and Dawn Liddicoat, and curated by CSI member Marci Rubin.

About the Exhibit:

Portraits encompass many forms, including traditionally posed portraits, candid portraits, environmental portraits, conceptual or symbolic portraits, and self-portraits. Representations of real or imagined individuals, couples, families, groups, etc.., in which their images are the primary focus are portraits.

Artistically inspired portraits strive to capture the subject’s personality, mood, essence, and character to communicate their uniqueness, story, voice or importance.

Actual physical likenesses to interpretative resemblances expressed via an artistic vision reveal the narrative and character of the subject. Historically to current artistic practices, the portrait is represented in every visual artistic style, movement, genre and media.
