The ABP is pleased to present periodontists who achieved Diplomate status in 2026. Visit https://www.abperio.org/blog/2026-oral-examination for a list of successful Oral Exam candidates.

The Oral Exam is designed to evaluate knowledge and clinical judgment in the specialty of periodontology. A psychometrician reviews all ABP exams to ensure they are fair, valid, and reliable. The reliability of the 2026 Oral Exam was .96, indicating the examination was able to highly differentiate among candidates of differing abilities.

The ABP was honored to recognize Dr. Gerald M. Bowers with the inaugural Legends of the Board Award in Naples, Florida, on June 24, 2026.

The Legends of the Board Award was created to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the American Board of Periodontology and the specialty of periodontology.

Dr. Bowers' contributions to organized dentistry span decades of distinguished service as a naval officer, clinician, educator, researcher, and mentor to countless colleagues and students. His leadership has left a lasting impact on the American Board of Periodontology and the specialty. Dr. Bowers served as Chair and Executive Director of the American Board of Periodontology. His long and dedicated service helped shape the organization into the respected certifying body it is today, leaving a legacy that will benefit the specialty for generations to come.
