International Children's Media Center Transforming education by humanizing the way children and adults engage with electronic screens. Children spend 1600 hours a year with screens.

Yet thousands of studies point to the dangers of “screen time” for children of all ages, while an avalanche of digital devices and content floods into schools and homes. What if these polarizing concerns could be resolved by the simple step of “priming” a child’s mind for optimal outcomes before turning on a screen? What we do before use use technology matters. For nine years, we've field-tested n

ew ways for children to view, use and engage digital devices. The result is Screen Smart®, an accelerated e-learning program that uses kinesthetic/physical exercise together with academic and social emotional curriculum to reverse the negative effects of screen time. With this unique brain-body approach, the ICMC provide experiences that fundamentally change people’s perceptions of the ways they can use and engage with technology. The Screen Smart® program is taught through 30-minute in-class or remote workshops. Each session equips students with self-regulation tools and improves focus to boost classroom engagement. Using that elevated focus, young children engage in close analysis of short video clips through a technique we call “Pause and Question." The approach is enquiry-based and child-centered. What happens in the child’s mind before engaging the screen is as important as what happens while and after viewing the screen. The ICMC incorporates this revolutionary learning approach in educational programs, festivals and workshops that model new ways to engage electronic screens and media while ensuring access to high quality, multi-cultural, age-appropriate films.
