Tonight, we’re grateful for the organizations that helped make this evening possible.

Their support helped bring people into the same room for a celebration centered on refugee voices, employment, opportunity, and the journey toward self-sufficiency.

The organizations featured here come from different fields and communities, but each chose to support a shared purpose.

Today is the day.

For the past few weeks, we’ve talked about employment, opportunity, partnership, and the long journey toward self-sufficiency.

Today, those conversations come into the room.

There will be numbers. There will be speakers. There will be recognition.

But some of the most important moments will come from the people who have lived this journey themselves.

Because refugee stories should not only be told about people.

There should also be space for people to tell us what the journey has looked like in their own words.

Today, we make room for those voices. 💙

A person rebuilding a life may need support in more than one area.

Employment is one part of the journey. Healthcare, education, disability services, mental health support, family resources, training, and community connections can matter too.

That is why these relationships are important.

The agencies and organizations featured here help connect people with services, information, resources, and opportunities that can support greater stability and independence.

No single organization can do everything. But when different parts of the community are connected, it becomes easier for people to find the next step they need.

We’re grateful for the partnerships and connections that continue to help this work reach more people.

Different roles. Different experiences. Different perspectives.

Each person featured here brings something important to the conversation about refugee employment, inclusion, opportunity, and the journey toward greater independence.

No single sector has every answer. Progress becomes possible when people with different responsibilities are willing to share what they know, understand where the gaps are, and help create better paths forward.

Tomorrow, these different perspectives come together in one room.

Tomorrow, months of planning become one evening in Chicago.

The stories we have been preparing to share will have voices behind them. The names in the program will become conversations. Refugee clients, ambassadors, employers, partners, advocates, and leaders will finally be in the same room.

There will be numbers and milestones to recognize, but there will also be something harder to measure: the experiences behind them.

What did it take to get here?
What changed along the way?
What still needs to happen next?

Thank you to everyone who registered, shared the event, supported the Gala, and helped bring this evening together.

On August 21, refugee voices, employers, community partners, advocates, and leaders will come together in Chicago for an evening centered on stories, progress, contribution, and the journey toward greater self-sufficiency.

Hope is in our name. But what do we hope people remember?

We hope they remember that a refugee does not arrive with an empty life. There are skills, years of experience, family responsibilities, plans, and goals that existed long before resettlement.

We hope they remember that finding a first job can be important without being the end of the story. People should still have room to learn, earn more, return to a profession, change direction, or simply decide what comes next.

We hope they remember that progress will not look the same for every person or every family.

And we hope that when decisions are made about refugees, their voices are not somewhere outside the conversation.

The numbers matter. The programs matter. The support matters.

But the people behind all of it should never disappear.

Who gets to tell a refugee story?

Too often, people hear about refugees through reports, numbers, programs, or someone speaking on their behalf.

But lived experience carries something those things cannot.

A person can tell you what starting over really felt like. What helped. What made things harder. What they hoped for. What changed after the first job. What they are still working toward.

In three days, refugee clients and ambassadors will have space to share those experiences in their own words.

Because if we are talking about refugee employment, stability, and self-sufficiency, the people living that journey should be part of the conversation.

A first job can help pay this month’s rent. But what could the next job change?

For many refugees, employment begins with what is available. That first opportunity matters. It can bring income, stability, local experience, and a place to begin.

But people do not stop having goals once they are hired.
There may still be a profession to return to. A skill to strengthen. English to improve. A better wage to work toward. A family to support. A future that looks very different one year, three years, or five years from now.

That is why we cannot look at a first job and assume the journey is complete.

Sometimes it answers the first question: Can I begin?

Then comes another: Can I keep growing?

There is no one timeline.

But the opportunity to keep moving forward matters.

Safety changes everything. But arrival does not answer what comes next.

A new country can also mean a new job market, unfamiliar systems, qualifications that may not transfer, language barriers, childcare needs, transportation problems, and the pressure to become stable quickly.
And finding the first job is not always the end of that story.

We look at what can happen after arrival, why the skills refugees already bring matter, and why employment, preparation, local opportunities, and continued support all play a part.

The questions begin in Chicago, but they are not only Chicago questions. Refugee-hosting communities around the world are asking many of the same things.

What happens after arrival?

And what does it really take to build a life from there?
