DEMIL Art Fund Spring 2024 Cohort Announcement:

The DEMIL Art Fund is excited to announce the Spring 2024 cohort of artists to be supported by the fund.

The newest cohort are veterans Eric J. Garcia, Maura García (non-enrolled Cherokee/Mattamuskeet) and Carlos Sirah.

The DEMIL Art Fund has funded three more veteran artists.

The newest cohort are veterans Darrell Fair of Chicago, IL, Gina Herrera of Bakersfield, CA, and Anthony Torres of Fort Lauderdale FL. Each of these recipients will work closely with the Veteran Art Movement and the DEMIL Art Fund to support the next Veteran Art Triennial.

The newest cohort are veterans Darrell Fair of Chicago, IL, Gina Herrera of Bakersfield, CA, and Anthony Torres of Fort Lauderdale FL. Each of these recipients will work closely with the Veteran Art Movement and the DEMIL Art Fund to support the next Veteran Art Triennial and Summit.

Over the last year, DEMIL Art Fund has supported nine artists with grants. These awards support veteran artists to expand their practice as we prepare for the next Veteran Art Triennial and Summit, SURVIVING THE LONG WARS, scheduled for March 16 - 19, 2023 in Chicago, IL.

Following GOODW.Y.N’s performance piece titled, “Ghost of Myself and You: Mothers of the Disappeared”, Zachary Frater conducted an interview with GOODW.Y.N. to unearth the unseen stories behind this project and their experiences in the military as a q***r individual. Meet the artists:
Erika Renee Land

Born on August 9th, 1983 in Norfolk, Virginia, Erika Renee Land is an American 21st-century war poet and 2021 MacDowell Fellow. She studied English with a focus in creative writing at the University of Georgia but left in her last semester because of her battle with PTSD. Posttraumatic stress disorder has been Erika’s nemesis since 2005, when she was deployed to Mosul, Iraq with the Army. She served 6.5 years before being honorably discharged.

Currently she has published poetry books, fiction novels, music and poetry albums, and the off-Broadway stage play PTSD and ME. Her struggle with PTSD has been featured on the Texas Public Radio program Worth Repeating, Veteran Affairs Borne the Battle and numerous other podcasts. Currently, she travels the country in a RV, performs spoken word wherever she can, educates about PTSD and gives out hugs.

Gerald Euhon Sheffield II

Gerald Euhon Sheffield II is an artist and educator living and working in Massachusetts and New York. His studio discipline is based in critical and site-specific research, developing a collaborative archive of material artifacts, and fluid dialogues between art, design, and public discourse. Sheffield’s professional background consists of a diversity of institutions and collaborations across borders. He served in the United States Army for eight years as a Visual Communications and Military Intelligence Public Affairs specialist in Paraguay, Guatemala, Brazil, and Kuwait. He deployed to Iraq from 2007-2008, working alongside Iraqi civilians and community leaders during the Iraqi Reconstruction campaign.
