How do we continue advancing excellence in education, regulation and safety, and improving global recognition of - and patient access to - osteopathic care?

Research is critical to achieving our goals!

Over the past two and a half decades, the annual number of osteopathic publications has grown consistently, reaching a significant peak around the COVID period, followed by a slight decline in subsequent years. The stacked bars clearly illustrate the diversity of study designs contributing to this output across the entire period. Data for 2025 covers the first half of the year only.

How do you know you are receiving the best training from your osteopathic training institution?

Excellence in osteopathic healthcare training, accreditation and regulation are underpinned internationally by the World Health Organisation Benchmarks for Training in Osteopathy (2010) and the European Standard on Osteopathic Healthcare Provision (2015). Excellence in osteopathic medicine is underpinned by national standards, such as those established by the U.S. Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.

The OIA continues to build strategic partnerships and support the objectives of the WHO via collaborative projects, as well as reaching out to other organisations that align with our vision, mission and goals, including IAMRA WRA, and the Global Self-Care Federation.

The OIA is working towards a new version of the Benchmarks for Training in Osteopathy (termed a ‘technical brief’) to include osteopathic medicine. The technical brief will serve to uphold excellence in education, improve governmental awareness, bolster recognition within national and international healthcare systems, and enhance public protection and access to health care from both streams of the osteopathic profession.

What is the World Rehabilitation Alliance and its importance to the OIA?

The World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA) is a WHO global network of stakeholders whose mission is to support the implementation of the Rehabilitation 2030 Initiative through advocacy activities.
OIA has been a member of WRA since September of 2025. OIA representatives are active in this network on several platforms: the Steering Committee, the Advocacy and Communications Task Force and various Work Streams that the WRA hosts.

The vision of WRA is a world where rehabilitation is integrated into every health system, ensuring all people achieve optimal functioning and well-being. Global health has traditionally measured death (Mortality) and disease (Morbidity). Following the Strategic Plan 2025-2030, WRA aims to establish Functioning as the third critical indicator of health system performance.

What is the role of medical regulatory authorities?

One of the key strategic goals of the Osteopathic International Alliance is to emphasize the importance and necessity of global regulation for our profession.

In order to advance this objective, the osteopathic profession has representation within the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) via the OIA.

IAMRA works to facilitate mutual recognition of medical and health qualifications across different countries. Networks of regulators like IAMRA enable qualified osteopathic professionals to have their credentials more readily recognized when they wish to practice internationally.

Why are the OIA Global Reports important to the osteopathic profession?

The OIA Global Report is an essential strategic tool that provides evidence-based data to advocate for the recognition and integration of the osteopathic profession into healthcare systems worldwide.

Completed as part of the OIA's collaboration with the WHO, the 2025 report demonstrates the profession's remarkable growth since the last survey in 2020—osteopathic presence in 46 countries and an 84% increase in osteopathic professionals serving approximately 37.7 million patients annually. It also documents moderate to strong evidence for effectiveness in musculoskeletal conditions, pediatric care, and women's health.

These reports are updated every 5 years to establish the objective benchmark data required for regulatory development and educational standardization, driving greater interprofessional collaboration, credibility and unity when engaging with governments, health authorities, and international organizations.

What do our patients think?

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) systematically capture information directly from patients receiving osteopathic care through digital questionnaires about their symptoms, function and quality of life before and after.

The National Council for Osteopathic Research based in the United Kingdom has used PROMs across multiple countries, with thousands of patients contributing data. Early findings show high levels of patient satisfaction and improvement following osteopathic care.

Listening to the patient voice strengthens the professions’ commitment to patient-centered care, quality improvement and transparent evaluation of outcomes.

In one of the European PROMs pilots:

97% of patients reported improvement within one week
84% reported major improvement or recovery after six weeks
nearly 90% reported very high satisfaction with osteopathic care

How can you be sure that you are in good hands?

Why are clear standards and scope of practice essential in osteopathic care?

- underpins regulation, accreditation and recognition,
- defines professional boundaries, ensuring patient safety,
- facilitates standardization of education internationally,
- outlines the knowledge, skills and professional attributes of professional practice;
- and establishes greater legitimacy of osteopathic practice within healthcare.

The annual World Osteopathic Healthcare Week, delivered by the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA), starts now. The WOHW 2026 will focus on different aspects of the work of the OIA, our networks, goals and aspirations.

We strive to highlight the important contribution of osteopathic health care professionals in the delivery of safe and effective care to key strategic areas, and to address challenges, such as the needs of an ageing population, healthcare workforce shortages and societal focus on disease-driven care rather than on prevention-driven care.
The OIA was founded in 2004 as an umbrella organization for osteopathic physicians and osteopaths. The OIA is approaching 80 member organizations from all over the world. It unifies osteopathic physicians and osteopaths by supporting high standards for education and regulation globally, and establishing better professional recognition regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The OIA is the only osteopathic organization in official relations with the World Health Organization since 2018 as a part of the Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) unit.
