When Emmanuel Thompson started building a mental health app in high school, he had the idea, the drive, and almost none of the support.

“You kind of run into a lot of different challenges when you're trying to start something like that,” Emmanuel shared. “You come from such a limited well of information.”

That changed when a trusted mentor connected him to The Gray Matter Experience.

Through Gray Matter, Emmanuel was pushed to think differently, take risks, and see failure as part of growth. “My life changed immensely,” he said. He built an entrepreneurial mindset that helped him win over $10,000 in pitch competitions, expand his professional network, and gain confidence navigating unfamiliar spaces.

That mindset followed him beyond entrepreneurship. Gray Matter helped Emmanuel develop the professional skills that led to his role as a Data Analyst at Aon, where he applies the same creativity, resilience, and problem-solving every day.

“For sure, the entrepreneurial mindset is the game changer,” Emmanuel reflected. “You understand that you may fail, and it’s okay. You just keep pushing forward.”

Stories like Emmanuel’s are why Gray Matter exists. We don’t just teach business concepts. We equip young people with the mindset, skills, and networks that open doors long after the program ends.

When potential meets opportunity, futures change.

Every Gray Matter student benefits from the presence of volunteers who share their time, experience, and encouragement.

Volunteers help students refine business ideas, practice pitching, navigate career decisions, and develop the confidence to step into leadership. These relationships often become some of the most meaningful parts of a student’s experience.

If you are a professional who believes in investing in the next generation of entrepreneurs and changemakers, we invite you to volunteer with The Gray Matter Experience.

Mentors often describe volunteering with TGME as one of the most rewarding ways to support the next generation of leaders.

By sharing their experiences and perspectives, volunteers help students see possibilities they may not have considered before. Conversations about careers, entrepreneurship, and leadership can shift how young people imagine their future.

We are grateful to every professional who contributes time and mentorship to this community.

Caralanay Cameron didn’t just volunteer with The Gray Matter Experience. She became part of the environment that helps ideas turn into something real.

As Founder and CEO of PartnerWork Innovations, Caralanay was first introduced to TGME through an event. What started as curiosity quickly became alignment.

“Hearing about what they were doing with high school students in Chicago aligned well with how I think about entrepreneurship and innovation.”

Since then, she’s been a consistent presence in the programs, working directly with students as they build and refine their ideas. What stands out most to her is the transformation she sees in real time.

“Watching how far they come from their initial idea to actually pitching and presenting their businesses is incredibly rewarding.”

That’s the role volunteers play at Gray Matter. They don’t just observe. They challenge, guide, and help students connect what they’re learning to what building something actually looks like.

And the impact goes both ways.

“Volunteering gets me out of the day-to-day of running my own business… I always walk away having learned something.”

That exchange of perspective is what makes this work powerful. Students gain access, exposure, and confidence. Volunteers gain insight, connection, and a front-row seat to what the next generation is building.

If you’re looking for a way to invest in young people while staying connected to fresh ideas and energy, this is what it looks like.

Issac didn't just gain exposure for his brand, Suffice, he gained structure.

“We lacked a little bit of education with building a business… I was able to learn a little bit more in that six week process.”

That gap is real for many young entrepreneurs. The ambition is there, but the knowledge, systems, and guidance are not always accessible.

Through The Gray Matter Experience, Suffice was paired with a mentor and introduced to the operational side of building a business. Not just ideas, but logistics. Hiring. Systems. Planning.

That shift changes everything.

“Learning how to hire people, learning how to teach people… implementing everything that I learned.”

This is what ACCELERATE is designed to do. It moves students beyond concept into ex*****on. It connects them to mentors who can help translate ideas into real processes and real growth.

Now, Suffice is looking ahead to their next phase, building toward a café and distribution center.

That kind of long-term thinking does not happen by accident. It comes from exposure, mentorship, and structured learning.

At Gray Matter, entrepreneurship is not treated as theory. It is practiced, refined, and built in real time.

Suffice is a reflection of what happens when young founders gain access to the knowledge and support they need to grow beyond the idea stage.

At 16, Jelani is not just building a brand. He's building a message.

“Strength, power, and resilience… success, potential, discipline.”

Those values are embedded in every piece created.

“Do not conform… be yourself and keep building even when it’s hard.”

This is what entrepreneurship looks like at an early stage. Not just product, but identity. Not just selling, but meaning.

Through The Gray Matter Experience, students are given the space to define what they want to build and why it matters.

Programs like IDEATE and ACTIVATE help young people move from concept to expression, turning personal values into something tangible. Whether that’s apparel, media, or another form of creation, the process is the same. Learn, build, refine.

For SPRSPD, that meant taking an idea rooted in self-discipline and growth and turning it into a brand that speaks directly to other young people.

And just as importantly, sharing it.

“Focus on yourself and keep building your own story.”

That mindset is at the core of Gray Matter’s approach. Helping students see themselves not just as participants, but as creators.

SPRSPD is not just a clothing brand. It’s an example of what happens when young people are given the tools and space to build something that reflects who they are.

Kaizen is built on a simple idea: continuous improvement.

That philosophy comes from martial arts, but it translates directly into entrepreneurship and personal growth.

“I struggled… with my mental health until I started my journey with martial arts.”

From that experience came a brand. One that combines art, discipline, and self-development.

“I drew all the designs… why not combine that passion and create a brand?”

This is what it looks like when personal experience becomes creative output.

Through The Gray Matter Experience, Kaizen’s founder was able to continue building while learning. The flexibility of the program made it possible to balance school, brand development, and skill-building at the same time.

“It was on my own pace and my own time.”

But more importantly, there was mentorship.

“I was able to get connected with my mentor… who really is an inspiration to me.”

That combination of flexibility, mentorship, and real-world application is what defines programs like ACCELERATE.

Gray Matter creates space for students to pursue what they care about, while also giving them the tools to grow those ideas into something sustainable.

“The art of improvement.”

That idea applies to both the brand and the process behind it.

Kaizen reflects what happens when young people are supported in turning their passions into something they can build, refine, and carry forward.

For many alumni, ACCELERATE was a turning point.

Through paid internships, mentorship, and real-world experience, students have built confidence, developed professional skills, and begun to see new possibilities for their futures.

For Elijah Casselle, a senior at Oak Park River Forest High School and former ACCELERATE participant, the program helped expand how he saw himself and what he believed was possible. Since his time in ACCELERATE, Elijah has continued building his business, WeGotShoez, which focuses on making quality footwear more affordable through restoration and resale. He’ll be heading to the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the fall and plans to major in finance.

“Being in a room with others who wanted to create their business and pursue their passion alongside all the people that were brought in to mentor and help us, helped me change how I look at myself.”

ACCELERATE is more than a program. It’s a space where young people are supported, challenged, and equipped to take their next step with intention.

Applications are now open.
