On Indigenous People’s Day, we honor the resilience of Native communities and reflect on why family, culture, and belonging matter so deeply. 🧡

At One Family Illinois, we’re committed to ensuring every child has the chance to stay connected to their identity, culture, and community while in our loving foster care.

We are so grateful for Mead & Hunt’s continued partnership and their commitment to showing up for our kids and community! 💚

From mulching and pulling weeds to building a shed to help winterize Chicago Village’s garden and prepare it for spring planting, the Mead & Hunt team has gone above and beyond to help our garden thrive. The kids also loved getting creative alongside the team during our garden stone craft activity, making meaningful memories while learning and growing together!

Thank you, Mead & Hunt, for investing your time, talents, and hearts into our youth. Your continued support helps our community grow in more ways than one! 🌷🪴

🤝 Foster Care Terms Explained: Reunification

Reunification is the process of safely returning a child to their parent(s) once the concerns that led to removal have been addressed. It's the most common, and most preferred, outcome in foster care.

Why it matters: Foster care is meant to be temporary support for a family in crisis, not a replacement for it. Foster parents play a huge role in reunification by supporting the birth family's progress.

👫 Foster Care Terms Explained: Sibling Placement

Sibling placement means keeping brothers and sisters together in the same foster home whenever it's safe to do so, rather than splitting them up across different families.

Why it matters: Siblings often become each other's main source of comfort and continuity during an incredibly difficult time. Separating them can add another layer of loss on top of everything else they're navigating. Research and lived experience show that siblings placed together experience greater emotional stability and stronger long-term outcomes, including reunification with their parents.

One Family Illinois prioritizes keeping siblings together in foster care.

🧠 Foster Care Terms Explained: Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care means recognizing that a child's reactions, like meltdowns, withdrawal, or testing boundaries, are a result of their past experiences.

Why it matters: Kids in foster care have experienced loss, instability, neglect, or harm. Caregivers trained in trauma-informed care can respond with patience and understanding, which is instrumental in a child's healing. 💞

🔑 Foster Care Terms Explained: Permanency

Permanency is the goal of every child welfare case: a safe, stable, lifelong family connection. That can look like reunification with parents, adoption, guardianship with a relative, or another legal arrangement that gives a child roots that won't disappear. 🌱

Why it matters: Kids in foster care can experience multiple placements in a single year. Permanency isn't just a legal outcome. It's the end of "not knowing where I'll be next."
