We have seen the video.
We have read the articles.
We have been shocked by the callousness and irreverence.
We are angered that this has been hidden from us.
She looks like one of us.
She is, one of us.
The value of her life cannot be quantified.

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23 years old, from Adoni city in Andra Pradesh (Kurnool District). No amount can remedy the grief of an elder returning her body to her mother for last rites. No amount can repay a mother for the hopes and dreams snatched away with the life of her child. For the Indian Community, we stand loudly to affirm that her value is without measure. We proclaim this truth where her mother’s voice cannot reach. We know the weight of Jaahnavi being here and the promise she contained for her people back home. We know the courage it took for her mother to let her go and how she would have held constant vigil for her beloved child’s safety in this distant place. We know it well because it is part of our own stories, which makes her death so utterly devastating.

Imagine in this moment of collective grief and outrage, someone shouting, “But all lives matter!”
Imagine in our righteous demand for accountability of law enforcement we are told, “Blue lives matter!”
Imagine how sacrilegious that would be to utter at a time such as this.
Because we know that when we affirm the life and value of Jaahnavi Kandula, we do it with the reverence of all life.
Because we know it is completely absurd to conflate our demand for police accountability with a false equivalency.
It is wrong, and we know this.
We also know it is done repeatedly to the Black Community each and every time a life is stolen from them. Even if you/I/ we may not be the ones to have said it, we know plenty of people in our community who have done it or remained silent when it happens. So, with this lament, a solemn reminder that we are not safe siloed and segregated within our own community. Our tax bracket and degrees do not make us more valuable to a system that was never intended to serve and protect us and operates with near impunity. We are all expendable to it.
Trust is not in the system, it is in us.

Repost from core team member - this is for all you Chicago folks out there committed to furthering justice, inclusion, and humanity in our own Malayalee community. We have a LOT of work to do when it comes to confronting and disrupting homophobia in our own families and communities.

Do you have a friend or family member who has come out but isn’t 💯 confident in showing up as their true authentic self to everyone in their life?

Do you know someone that is scared to come out due to fear of potentially hurting or shaming their families?

These are situations that too many of our LGBTQ siblings in BIPOC communities experience. It’s a situation that is rarely talked about and because of that many of us don’t know how to show up and support the loved ones in our lives who identify with the LGBTQ+ community.

This Friday the will be hosting a panel of LGBTQ+ identifying Chicagoans who have found acceptance, joy, and belonging and will share insights and experiences to create a deeper awareness and work towards disrupting homophobia.

If you are looking for a meaningful way to kick off your weekend, join me this Friday from 6-8:30 to listen, learn, and be in community with Chicagoans committed to confronting and disrupting homophobia.

bites and beer will be available during the happy hour portion of the evening. Come taste some delicious South Asian craft creations and be a part of creating social change.

Tickets are $20 and all proceeds are going to a LGBTQ+ organization serving BIPOC youth and .

If you can’t make it- share this with someone in your life who would benefit from this conversation. ♥️

Calling all South Asian Caste Abolitionists & Anti-Castists! I am launching an 8-week cohort for South Asians that will center on the book, The Trauma of Caste: A Dalit Feminist Meditation, Survivorship, Healing, and Abolition by Thenmozhi Soundarajan

Join me as we delve deep into this text and unpack what it means for us as South Asians in the diaspora. Regardless of ethnic, linguistic, cultural, or religious identity, caste has impacted our lives whether we realize it or not.

Who is this cohort for?

South Asians of all backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, religious affiliations/ non-religious and ethnic identities who desire to debrahminize and dismantle the caste system and who want to build community with like-minded individuals.

As diasporic South Asians who bear a multitude of unhealed wounds (racism, racial violence, gender-based violence, oppression, patriarchy, sexism, queerphobia, loss of connection, displacement, colonization, family traumas, etc) it can be hard to grapple with the notion that you benefit from caste privilege or are complicit in caste-based violence especially if it was not openly acknowledged in your upbringing.

This Cohort is not a place to shame or guilt you. This Cohort is intended to be a transformative space that holds the complexity of your own marginalized identity and lived experience in tension with the truth of the death-dealing, violent, and oppressive caste system.

This is an invitation to co-create community, radical change, and revolutionary transformation in our lifetime. Just as many of us are well into our anti-racism journeys, speaking out against anti-Blackness and colorism, we must acknowledge that the caste system pre-dates the construct of race and study how this system has operated in the same brutal manner as anti-Blackness, therefore, making caste abolition an urgent matter. Join me as we do the hard work and endeavor into becoming good ancestors. Link to application in my bio.

Repost from team member :

Innocent and unarmed men have been murdered by police for generations in this country. It’s something I’m aware of and even though it saddens me every-time I learn of another murder seemingly caused by subconscious racial bias, I’m not usually surprised or shocked.
That changed when I learned about the murder of Rajan Moonesinghe. Raj was a 33 yr old South Asian entrepreneur who was building a business in Austin. Just like myself and most of my South Asian friends and family, he grew up in America, was family oriented, went to college, and had a successful career. Raj was gunned down by on his own porch last month

Raj is the brother in law of one of my cousins. Although I didn’t personally know Raj, I know his brother and the grief I feel for this family is painful. I can’t even fathom what his family has been dealing with. This incident should be a wake up call to all Brown folks- especially those who think that racism is something that “other” communities of color experience and not something we will ever have to deal with. The reality is that NONE of us are spared from the system of white supremacy and racism.

Anyone of us could have been Raj- an innocent brown skinned person in the wrong place at the wrong time. Non Black people of color: We need to wake the F up.

This incident made me think about the ongoing grief that Black Americans and families experience due to the common murders of their innocent fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons. As South Asians, we have the privilege of not having this kind of tragedy be a regular occurrence but that doesn’t mean we should look the other way.

Raj and his family will never receive justice but at the least they deserve to see accountability. Although NBC has picked up this story- there has been such little media coverage on this injustice. PLEASE help this family by using your platforms to create awareness about this murder. Head to link in my bio to learn more and share on your stories. The more media coverage this receives the less likely it is that this will be silenced.
