Anniversaries give us the opportunity to honor our legacy, celebrate what is being achieved today, and look toward the future with renewed purpose. As COPRODELI celebrates 37 years of service, we thank God for the volunteers, teachers, school principals, professional staff, donors, and partners who have placed their talents and generosity at the service of the communities that need them most.
When Thomas McDonald returned to Chicago in 1999 after working with COPRODELI children in Callao, he understood that solidarity needed a bridge. What began as a volunteer-based organization became COPRODELI USA: a growing network of people and institutions committed to carrying opportunity across borders and working hand in hand with communities in Peru and Ecuador.
With the support of allies such as Altar’d State, that solidarity has helped mobilize more than US$6 million for education, child sponsorships, humanitarian aid, and community development. Today, it can be seen in 101 classrooms built, 1,100 computers installed, more than 450 children currently sponsored, over 100 volunteers who have served as English teachers, and more than 50 solidarity and corporate trips that have connected people across borders. Thirty-seven years later, solidarity is still in good hands—and it continues to create opportunities for generations to come.
