International Voices Project

International Voices Project IVP brings global voices to Chicago stages through commissions, translations and production.

We collaborate with consulates, cultural partners, universities, and national and international theatres to promote global playwrights at the national level. Celebrate the voices of international playwrights with premiere concert-style readings of selected plays performed by professional casts. After each reading, there will be a post-performance discussion with the cast and audience, followed by a reception hosted by the consulates.

10/01/2026

Every play we produce has been lived in twice: once by the playwright, once by the translator.

Today is International Translation Day, and we want to thank every translator across 16 seasons who has trusted us with their work. Translation is how the story gets here!

Who are the translators whose work has stayed with you? Drop them in the comments!

Meet the playwright behind our next reading: The Earth’s Core!

With a particular interest in psychological drama, in history’s forgotten fates, and in what happens when harsh realism meets the poetic magic of theatre, Simone Isabel Nørgaard's work has been presented on stages across Denmark, as well as in Germany and the UK. The Earth’s Core brings one remarkable woman’s story back into the spotlight.

📅 September 29, 2026 | 6:00 PM
Tickets are free to reserve on our website and all readings are followed by a reception with our team and artists!

THE EARTH'S CORE | Denmark 🇩🇰
Playwright: Simone Isabel Nørgaard
Translator: Paul Russell Garrett
Director: Kay Martinovich
In Partnership with Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago

In 1936 Inge Lehmann solves one of science’s great mysteries, discovering the Earth’s inner core. Lehmann dedicates her life to science but never receives full recognition for her massive discovery and contributions, remaining largely unknown in her native Denmark.

The Earth’s Core brings Lehmann’s story to life, in a play about women and science in the twentieth century. We see Lehmann up close as she struggles with herself and with the outside world, and we get to meet the other people in her life. A forgotten fate unfolds into a drama that spans both decades and continents.
