Good Afternoon,

Today we continue to celebrate not only Women's Month, but also Social Workers Month.

Alice Walker Known for her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Color Purple, critically acclaimed author Alice Walker began her journey as a women's rights and civil rights activist. She worked as a social worker, teacher, and lecturer and became recognized for her work with the Civil Rights Movement, fighting for equality for African Americans. Her third novel, The Color Purple, was made into a Steven Spielberg directed film. The movie received numerous awards, including eleven Academy Award nominations. In 2005, the movie became a Broadway musical.

As we continue to Celebrate Women's Month. We would like to celebrate one of Chicago's very own. Chef Mariya Russell.

Russell is chef de cuisine at Kikkō, a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Chicago. In September, she became the first black woman to be awarded a Michelin star in the Michelin Guide's 93-year history.

Ms. Burby is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Indiana and Illinois, who obtained her Master's Degree from Governor's State University. She has been a Social Worker for 12+ years. She has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Ms. Burby has a passion for working with people and she has been able to develop this passion while working in the Foster Care System, Outpatient Mental Health Setting. Public and Charter School Systems and at her own private practice (S. Burby Mental Health Consulting). Ms. Burby believes everyone deserves to be whole, healthy, loved and understood and this can be achieved by providing a safe, nurturing place to attain healing and wellness.

Mary Church Terrell was an educator and social reformer best known for her professional lecture tours and writings on race relations and women's rights. In 1904 she represented black women at the International Congress of Women in Berlin. Delivering her address in three languages.

We recognize Michelle LaVaughn Obama. She is an American attorney and author who was the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She is married to the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, and was the first African-American first lady.

As we continue to Celebrate Women's Month we would like to recognize Ms. Amber Scott.

Recognizing the power of education to lift families out of poverty, she founded Leap Year, an Atlanta-based nonprofit with the mission of helping low-income and first-generation college students succeed. As executive director, she oversees the program—which had three fellows in its pilot year and four in its current cohort—which puts high school graduates through a gap year filled with tutoring, confidence building, and paid service to prepare them academically and socially for higher education.

Today we Recognize Our Vice President Kamala Harris.
She has a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Howard University where she was on the debate team and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She got her law degree from UC Hastings College of Law.
Harris served as San Francisco district attorney from 2004-2011 and California attorney general from 2011-2016.
In 2017, she became the second Black woman and the first South Asian-American to be sworn in as a senator.
Kamala Harris is the first woman, the first Black person and the first Asian-American person elected vice president of the United States. Her mom left her with a motto that she lives by:
"You may be the first, but make sure you're not the last."

We ALL KNOW ITS MARCH MADNESS!!!

But, DID YOU KNOW this Month is “Women’s Month” and “Social Workers Month”?

The first Women’s History Day was held in 1909. The day became Women’s History Week in 1978. In 1987, it became Women’s Month.

Since 1995, every president has issued a proclamation declaring MARCH WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH.

The White House officially Recognized MARCH as National Professional Social Work Month in 1984.

THE BOARD OF KALM WORKS would like to say HAPPY WOMEN’S Month to all of the women, and Social Worker Month to our very own Lynette and Korey whom are Social Workers.
