🎊Today, the Republic of Kosova celebrates its 18th Anniversary of Independence, a day that means a lot to the people of Kosova, most especially our Communications Associate, Gresë Sermaxhaj.

Gresë has supported the Goldin Institute remotely for over three years, working from Kosovo’s capital, Prishtina, sharing, from afar, the lived stories and resilience that shape our global community.

Community is at the center of everything we do, and moments like this remind us of the personal significance of those stories and how they define us as a global team.

Today, we’re revisiting a reflection Gresë wrote in 2023 on her memory of the war in Kosovo in 1999 and how her work with the Goldin Institute connects to her ongoing commitment to social justice, inspiring us all to continue advocating for change: https://goldininstitute.org/2023/11/29/21st-anniversary/

📷 Gresë working from a local café in Prishtina, where the day only begins after the first coffee. On her table sits the Newborn Monument, a typographic sculpture unveiled on February 17, 2008, the day Kosovo declared its independence.

📢 Meet Javiera, our newest team member, who will be supporting the Goldin Institute’s Colombia office.

A Chilean human rights lawyer, she will work closely with Fellows, partners, and
grassroots leaders across South America to strengthen connections, amplify local
initiatives, and support community-led change across the region.

Javiera is currently completing the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme in
Human Rights, a joint degree with the University of Gothenburg, University of
Deusto, Roehampton University, and the Arctic University of Norway. Her
professional focus centres on the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls,
guided by a strong commitment to intersectionality in both advocacy and practice.
Most recently, she volunteered with Caritas Dakhla in Western Sahara, coordinating
humanitarian and psychosocial support for migrants in transit. Her ability to operate
across policy, practice, and on-the-ground realities is one of her key strengths.

She joins the Goldin Institute with clarity, energy, and a grounded commitment to
community-driven work.

At 15, picking up a flyer in a school field in Tanzania changed many things for Yusuph, Director at the Goldin Institute Tanzania, who, inspired by the words of the late Dr. Jane Goodall, began a journey that grew into a mission spanning more than 20 years in community development and conservation.

🌟 What was the 2025 Goldin Global Fellowship like?

"I saw the impact of building an inclusive team and engaging the right people when I left my country to study abroad. Even while in China, I continued working with my team remotely, and because the right people were in place, we sustained the work we began through the GATHER Fellowship, continuing to learn and apply GATHER principles together."

Miracle Ogbogu, 2025 Goldin Global Fellow from Nigeria

"A major impact of the fellowship was the connection to the Chicago Peace Fellows, which resulted in a new partnership and a Chicago Peace Fellow joining my organization’s board."

Joseph Asare, 2025 Goldin Global Fellow from Ghana
