Powerfully, bravely and generously shared story told through an interview of Charlize Theron by The New Yorker.

Let this be a reminder too that, Globally, 120 women and girls are killed every day by a partner or family member. But so often when women and girls, particularly Black women and girls, are able to take action in self-defense, they are charged with murder.

They aren’t murderers. They are heroic defenders of their children, their pregnancies, and their own precious selves.

Did you know that Charlize Theron’s mom shot her abusive husband to save her daughter and herself after he shot into their home, drunk and full of threats and rage?

We most often hear about these stories in a crappy and inaccurate, quickly written crime beat article that rarely involve the perspective of survivors and survivor experts. We are grateful to Charlize Theron and The New Yorker for this story. They should cover more of these.

These are hero stories, and we should know this, in part, because it is far more often that the abusive partner kills his victim rather than the victim acting in self-defense, resulting in the death of their abuser.

It is also statistically more common for killings committed by men to be ruled justifiable. But is most clear by far, is that when Black women defend their lives—and children and pregnancies—resulting in the death of their abuser, they are prosecuted for murder. What message does this send except that Black women are denied the equal right to defend themselves, or worse, that the state (still) does not deem their lives worthy of protection.

Thank you for so powerfully sharing your story, Charlize Theron, and with such love and respect for your brave mom.

Language matters, and even if the mainstream media considers it bias to concede this is a self-defense case, using language that is more specific can help too, e.g. "stabbed---resulting in his death".

Instead, the language used suggests that Keshia was the aggressor, whereas her history of calls to police, beatings in front of witnesses, hospital visits, and the bruises and strangulation marks on the day of her arrest tells a different story.

Hello, friends! Many thanks to all who have been supporting Keshia Golden in any way you can! Right now she needs some help with food and other basics.

Keshia's was 8 months pregnant when she acted in self-defense, and then charged for the tragic and unintended outcome.

Thankfully, Keshia did not miscarry as a result of the beatings and assaults she survived before this tragedy, and her baby is now three.

While Keshia's baby is beautiful and brilliant like her mama, she was born with a severely curved spine. Keshia has continued to protect and advocate for her baby, and so today they are headed to the hospital for corrective spine surgery.

Afterwards, Keshia will have to keep her bright and active toddler in bed for THREE WEEKS. Imagine that. She will need all the help she can from the community to ensure all their basic needs are met while she is focused almost entirely on the care of her daughter.

Given the sensitivity of Keshia's situation already, close friends and family will bring food as they can. But, everyone is busy and there are always additional needs. We had a great rally for Keshia on Monday, and 5 full rows of court support on Tuesday! Let's keep the pressure up! Let's persist until we hear "case dismissed!"
