We are proud to highlight Christina Rogers, our 2025–2026 Chicago Area Schweitzer Larry J. Goodman, MD Named Fellow. 💙

Throughout the Fellowship year, Christina — a medical student at Rush University — has been implementing workshops for underserved older adults and their caregivers focused on cognitive health and quality of life. Her project promotes evidence-based lifestyle behaviors, including physical activity, cognitive engagement, social connection, and adherence to the MIND diet, to help address cognitive health disparities.

The Larry J. Goodman, MD Named Fellowship is supported by Dr. David Ansell in honor of Dr. Goodman’s extraordinary leadership at Rush University Medical Center and longstanding commitment to advancing health equity.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Ansell and to all of our generous donors who make this work possible. Your investment supports Fellows like Christina as they partner with communities to create meaningful, lasting change. ✨

Welcome, Louis! 💙🌱

We’re excited to introduce Louis Lee as our 2026 Spring Ben and Susan Squires Equity Intern at Health & Medicine.

Louis is part of Northwestern’s Accelerated Public Health Program and brings experience as a certified nursing assistant and community health worker. He is focused on advancing policies that support older adults and caregivers and has worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health, AgeOptions, and the Midwest Asian Health Association.

This internship is made possible by Amy Squires and Sarah Squires-Doyle in honor of their parents, Susan and Ben Squires — lifelong champions of health equity in Illinois. Their commitment to mentoring young professionals and expanding access to care continues through this equity internship.

We’re so glad you’re here, Louis! ✨

We are thrilled to welcome Olivia Zelling as our 2026 HiteHass Spring Equity Intern at Health & Medicine! 🎉

Olivia is a Master of Public Policy candidate at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, concurrently enrolled in the Graduate Program in Health Administration & Policy. She brings a strong focus on health care affordability and accessibility, along with experience in research, communications, and public affairs through roles with the University of Chicago Medicine, TexPIRG, Reservoir Communications Group, and the U.S. Department of State. She also serves as a 2025–2026 Staff Writer for the Chicago Policy Review, specializing in health policy analysis.

The HiteHass Equity Internship is generously supported by Drs. Marsie Hass and Scott Hite, who established this named internship to further the work of Health & Medicine co-founder Dr. Quentin Young and advance health equity. Rooted in classical rabbinic teachings, they believe social policy should provide additional protection for those who may be disadvantaged. As they share, “We believe that we must continue to do what we can to promote equity in both health and medicine.”

Health & Medicine’s paid internship program provides graduate students with meaningful, hands-on experience in health policy and public health practice, mentorship, and opportunities to grow their professional networks — all grounded in advancing health equity and eliminating structural inequities.

We are grateful to Drs. Hass and Hite for their leadership and generosity, and we are excited to have Olivia on the team this spring. Welcome, Olivia! 💙

On February 10, the CHW Learning Collaborative convened community health worker (CHW) supervisors from across suburban Cook County for a virtual session titled, “Leading CHW Teams in Challenging Times.”

Facilitated by Kim Jay ( Urban Health Institute), the session created space for supervisors to reflect on the complexities of leading CHW teams amid burnout, system strain, and evolving expectations. Through guided discussion and reflection, participants explored practices for providing supportive supervision, clarifying roles, and sustaining CHW teams, all centered on trust, equity, and well-being.

Thank you to the CHWs who showed up with honesty, insight, and commitment as we began another year of collective learning, connection, and workforce strengthening!

We are grateful to LARC for providing interpretation services and ensuring language access and inclusive participation for all attendees.

Dr. Ashok Jagasia recently connected with Mary Chaudhry, this year’s Ashok Jagasia, MD, PhD CURE Fellow, over lunch to learn more about her work and reflect on the vision behind this Named Fellowship. 🌟🍽️

Established in 2025, the CURE Fellowship honors Dr. Jagasia’s commitment to bridging health disparities and expanding access to high-quality care for underserved communities. As founder of the Center for the Underserved at Rush ENT (CURE) and Director of Rush Otolaryngology Global Health, he has advanced innovative models of care that reduce barriers for homeless, migrant, rural, and other marginalized populations. 💚

Mary, a medical student at Midwestern University, is carrying that mission forward through her Schweitzer project at the Hamdard Center. Her work addresses health care disparities in South Asian and other immigrant communities through culturally tailored preventive health education workshops and screenings. By empowering individuals to proactively manage chronic conditions, her project strengthens health literacy, improves outcomes, and expands equitable access to care. 🩺✨

Moments like these highlight what makes the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellowship so meaningful — mentorship, partnership, and shared commitment to advancing health equity in tangible ways. 🤝
