Jim Elliot Fellowship Sharing the Gospel on the streets of Chicago

01/26/2025

JEF is officially relaunching as Reformation Chicago, and we will be switching to Reformation Chicago as our new account.

We were born out of a long legacy of student evangelism at Wheaton College, stemming back to Jim and Elizabeth Elliot’s evangelistic journeys to Chicago on the train. We carried their spiritual torch as best we could, and count it an honor to have been associated with a man of whom the world was not worthy.

As you know, we have gone beyond Wheaton College and have entered a new chapter of ministry. By God’s grace, we will continue our weekly outreaches. Yet we are also involved in discipleship, building an online presence, working towards launching a church in 2026, and training and equipping churches of Chicagoland. We desire to mobilize and equip reformed churches in evangelism. And we desire to see churches planted throughout the city of Chicago, seeking a total reformation of this city.

Your faithful support in prayer is needed now more than ever as we enter this new chapter of ministry.

For more, please check out our new website www.ReformationChicago.com

And please watch our relaunch video below!

If you haven’t done so yet, please subscribe to our newsletter to know how you can support and pray for us! https://mailchi.mp/03a308d3bc01/subscribe

Again, we will no longer be using this facebook account. Like and follow Reformation Chicago, and help us out by sharing our release video!

I cannot thank you enough for your faithful labors, prayer, and support.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Chong

Chinatown Bible Studies
11.7.2024 & 11.21.2024
In November, we had our final two Bible studies at Alastair’s place in Chinatown. Alastair is preparing to move to Peru to serve the Peru Mission. (He can be supported here, under the Alastair Wright Ministry tab.) We are grateful for Alastair’s hospitality to our group. In years to come some may look back and say that they were born again in that apartment.
We finished up the Gospel of John after almost a year, and we are covering a few topics such as the Great Commission and the Lord’s Prayer before moving to the book of Ephesians.

Naperville Evangelism
11.2.2024
In October, we hosted a training session for a young adults group at High Point Church in Naperville. This month, we invited this group to participate in an outreach in downtown Naperville. We praise God for many good conversations. Two agnostics stopped and talked for a long time, and one left with a Bible.

West Loop Prayer Walk
11.9.2024
Love Life Chicago put on a powerful event that we were thankful to join. Many Christians from Bible-believing Chicago churches filled part of the West Loop with songs of praise and prayers for the unborn. The sidewalks were packed as we marched around the busiest abortion mill in Chicago. Simultaneously, a team of sidewalk counselors and evangelists, fueled by the prayers of the saints, stood by the entrance and engaged with moms and dads. Rev. Brandon Myers of Christ the King Reformed Baptist Church gave a short sermon.

Loop Evangelism
11.5.2024 & 11.23.2024
On the 15th, JEF had a joint outreach with Doxa, the evangelism team at Moody Bible Institute. Jeremy gave a sermonette at the devotional time before a large group hit the streets near the Chicago Theater in the evening. A handful of students stayed in Moody’s Broman Chapel for three hours, filling the sails of those evangelizing with their prayers. Almost every weekend, Doxa brings the gospel to the city on Friday nights, and we bring it on Saturday afternoons.

NYC Evangelism
11.29.2024
Jeremy and Hannah had a fruitful Thanksgiving in NYC, and the Lord opened doors for the gospel to go forth. Pray for a Roman Catholic Christmas Tree seller named Lorraine from Quebec, whom Jeremy got to speak with two days in a row. On the second day, he gratefully received Jeremy’s personal New Testament held in the photo below. After preaching to a receptive and respectful crowd at the 103rd street Subway station, everyone sitting on the Uptown side took a gospel tract.

Chicago Evangelism Updates Pt. 2:

Loop Evangelism
10.19.2024 & 10.26.2024
Colin, Mario, and Jensen held down the fort in Millennium Park on the 19th and brought the gospel to many lying in darkness. A week later, Dane, Jeremy, Emily, Jared, and Mike shared the gospel on the Riverwalk, where we were encouraged by many long, fruitful conversations and contacts for the Bible study. A lady from Bridgeport told us that if we start a church there, she would definitely come.

Evangelism Class
10.24.2024
On Thursday the 24th, Jeremy taught a two-part evangelism class for the Highpoint Young Adults group in Naperville, IL. The first part covered the method of evangelism, and the second part covered the message of evangelism. Jeremy and JY had a live evangelism demonstration at the end, with JY as the unbeliever.
Jim Elliot Fellowship is passionate about training, encouraging, and mobilizing normal believers to evangelize in an accessible, loving, and theologically sound way. We would love to put on a training session or conference for your church.

Chicago Evangelism Updates Part 1:

Loop Evangelism
10.5.2024
On the 5th we had the joy of being able to invite people to Bible study right in the Loop, as our next meeting would be in the vicinity of Carla’s building.
One girl said she used to go to college in the Loop and enjoyed seeing us at the station passing out these same tracts and sharing the gospel for years. When asked if she had a relationship with God, she said no, however, she wants one. We also met a formerly CRC girl from Michigan studying at the Art Institute, and we are hoping she will come to future Bible studies.

Lansing Evangelism
10.12.2024
Across Torrence Avenue lies a vile hotel with such drug dealing and prostitution that local restaurants do not deliver there. OPC Evangelist Chris Byrd joined us, and we had a phenomenal hour of street evangelism, many of us doing it for the first time.
Joshua Savage, a Senior at Mid-America Reformed Seminary, was deeply encouraged by his first time sharing the gospel on the street. A man had just gotten out of prison the previous Tuesday, and he told us that already multiple people had spoken to him about Jesus. Josh spoke to him powerfully and gave him his study bible. Afterward, Josh reflected:“This was my first time sharing the gospel with a complete stranger, and it was truly life-changing for me. These exact people were meant to hear the gospel that day and at that time. To look straight into the eyes of a stranger, and share the truth of Jesus Christ is an experience unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It’s like I had only been living half of the Christian life—and never realizing there was another half. It was like a curtain lifting and showing me something I never knew was there. I looked into the eyes of a broken and lost man who, it seemed, was a project of the Holy Spirit. I looked into his eyes and told him about Jesus, who loves sinners and saves sinners who think they can’t be saved.”

Bible Study in Chicago Updates:

Chinatown Bible Study
10.3.2024
On October 3rd, Rev. Iain Wright joined us for Bible study in Chinatown. The group enjoyed writing various words in other languages and drawing pictures on a wall that was about to be repainted. We covered the crucifixion of Christ for undeserving sinners in John 19.

Loop Bible Study
10.17.2024
As Charles Spurgeon wrote, “No sort of defense is needed for preaching out of doors; but it would need very potent arguments to prove that a man had done his duty who has never preached beyond the walls of his meeting house. A defense is required rather for services within buildings than for worship outside of them.”
Our two main hosts were unavailable this particular Thursday but the Lord answered our prayers for a meeting location. Carla graciously hosted us on her roof deck, over 20 stories off of the ground of the Loop. 7 years ago began sharing the gospel at the zero-zero point of the city, the center of the grid at State and Madison. In the providence of God, we got to meet above that spot, one block away from where it all started. Dane led our study on the resurrection of Jesus in John 20 to the sound of distant cars below and under the fire, skyscrapers, airplanes, and stars above.

9.5.2024
We had another strong start to the school year at our Bible study. The experienced OPC church planter, Dr. Eric Watkins, joined us for the first time and provided helpful feedback. This Bible study marks the beginning of our third year meeting together. The Lord has blessed us and has carried us a long way from our first small meeting in a McDonalds in 2022.

Chicago Evangelism Updates pt.2:
9.14.24
Colin, Sara Grace, and Jeremy spent the morning filming for our movie on Biblical Theology. Afterwards, we had a great outreach in the park in which we shared the gospel by interviewing a few people on video for our YouTube channel, Reformation Chicago Radio.

9.21.24 & 9.28.24
We had two lovely Saturday outreaches. Dr. Watkins led a large group of believers from the Presbytery to evangelize door to door near Grace OPC in Hanover Park. It was encouraging to see how respectful people were and how some good conversations emerged. A handful of people were invited to church. The proximity of the church building in the community made it much easier to engage in this work.
And finally, Dane, Olivia, Jared, and Emily closed out the month with a strong outreach of fruitful conversations in downtown Chicago.

Chicago Evangelism Updates pt.1:
8.31.24
We started the school year with a bang, dispersing into three groups to bring the gospel to Millenium Park, the Lake subway station, and the streets of the Loop. Our group included Mid-America Reformed Seminary students, Moody students, a brother from Maranatha Church, a brother from the Orchard, a brother from Grace OPC, and a sister from Wheaton.

9.7.24
The Lord providentially crossed our paths with a believer named Carla and her friend from NYC who are zealous followers of Christ. Carla has since joined our Bible study and been a great encouragement to our group. Many heard the gospel, including a few men in the Navy. URC Licentiate, Bryce Klassen, joined us and was bold in walking up to people and getting in conversations.
A Texan brother, Will Dieterich, joined us for our outreach. His story and his preaching of the gospel were a great encouragement.
Will reflected: “The last time I was at the Bean was back in 2011 after a night of tripping acid at Lollapalooza. I was under the bean as the lights reflected everywhere and the security ran off the couple hundred of us that congregated under the bean. Today I talked about how love is truly defined in Christ. It was a joy to come back to the bean and address the lies of the culture that I once believed to preach the truth. It was a blessing and humbling to join the team to proclaim Christ the only one who provides redemption. I was surprised how many conversations we were able to get into in the 2 hours we were there. The Bean is a great spot to preach Christ. The exclusive Savior of the world. I’m glad my identity is in him and not some perishing identity like being an acid head or a raver. God is gracious and his mercies are new every morning.”

// PART II \\
Bridgeport Bible Study
7.11.2024
New Life Community Church in Bridgeport kindly let our Bible study meet at their church on July 11th. We ate Chicago style pizza and had a great meeting. Two visitors came and heard the gospel.
University of Chicago Evangelism
7.13.24
Dane and Jeremy had some great conversations at the University of Chicago on Saturday the 13th. We spoke with students from Mexico City, Ghana, and all over the country. A highlight of the day was evangelizing a young man named Micah who was extremely receptive to the gospel and wanted to be saved. Please pray for Micah’s salvation. He had to go home, but he left with some resources and told us he would seek the Lord in prayer when he arrived home.
While we were speaking with Micah, the lady pictured above was stopped at the red light and listened in to the conversation. She was so encouraged hearing about Jesus that she pulled over and started talking with us. We reasoned with her about how justification is by faith alone because she is in a cult which came out of the Church of Christ. Although we debated with her, she loved what we were doing and wants us to evangelize her nephew who studies at UChicago.

// PART I \\
Chinatown Bible Study
6.20.2024
Dane led a lively study on John chapter 13. We were joined by Pastor Keith who pastored on the Southside for many years. He was encouraged by the fellowship. A colleague of Alastair and Kim also joined us for the first time and has been interested in learning more about Christianity.

Millenium Park Evangelism
6.22.2024
The word of God went forth with power at the Bean. Dane and Jeremy spoke with a man who thought he was a Christian but was practicing witchcraft. We encouraged him to abandon all spiritual practices except those prescribed by the word of God, and he was very humble and receptive. A false teacher and follower of a YouTube heretic named Bryan Denlinger also showed up and brought a group to ‘evangelize’ in the park. Last Summer this same false teacher came to our Bible study once, seeking to spread his views and caused us some difficulty. Benito is particularly gifted in Urban Apologetics, and he debated with them about the Trinity and the necessity of being part of a church while we continued preaching the gospel.
O-Block Evangelism
6.29.2024
On Saturday the 29th, Ben and Jeremy shared the gospel under the L stop next to Parkway Gardens, informally known as O-Block. O-Block was the childhood block of Michelle Obama and also famous gangster rappers such as King Von, Lil Durk, and Chief Keef. It is a place in desperate need for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The locals welcomed Ben and Jeremy and were very respectful. A van from a South Side ministry was also there passing out free meals with gospel tracts inside. The first lady we spoke to was an addict and a pr******te who just had her children removed by CPS. She herself was raised in the foster care system in this area and was filled with anger that her own kids are now entering that same system.
